Some STERN Words

I am always surprised by people and their reactions. This week there has been some controversy over JC Penny hiring Ellen DeGeneres to be their spokesperson. Apparently an organization called One Million Moms (who have only 42,644 FB Likes but anyway) have a problem with Ellen because she is gay. According to their website, One Million Moms "want our children to have the best chance possible of living in a moral society."

I wonder what their definition of "Moral" is? Is teaching their children to hate, segregate, judge and attack people because of their PERSONAL choices teaching them morals? if people of the same sex have a family (with our without children) how is their love not valid? or the same as heterosexual couples? These groups usually use religion or "God" as an excuse for their ignorant bigotry. I'm not a religious person but I am a spiritual one and from where I sit no matter what "god" you pray too they are all-loving and all-inclusive.

Ellen spoke out about her haters saying "my haters are my motivators" and had THIS message for them:

I am a mother of 2 and a step mother of 2. I feel it is imperative we teach our children tolerance, acceptance, inclusion and LOVE. We ALL have a RIGHT to be EQUAL -men and women, regardless of sexual preference, religious beliefs, skin color, or personal choices. This is not just a gay/lesbian issue but a HUMAN one. The only labels we should be placing on people is a label of LOVE and acceptance. Celebrating differences instead of promoting the generic herd mentality.

I was impressed that Howard Stern had a few STERN words for all of the anti-gay, haters out there. FINALLY he is ranting about something meaningful. LISTEN:

Keep Moving ... FORWARD

I love how the Internet is a wealth of information. I love reading inspirational quotes and statements from those who have gone before me and 'made it happen'. There are also plenty of current references of inspiration on-line too, people really putting themselves out there and never giving up. It is one thing take "advice" of a friend who has never been there but it is quite another from a motivational perspective to take the advice that has been left behind by those who have really walked the walk.

This statement really resonated with me yesterday and as always I am compelled to share.

“Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination are omnipotent. Regardless of your current situation what really counts is that you KEEP MOVING FORWARD, never give up or quitting! Know that it is ok to take a break sometimes from the relentless pursuit of your dreams and visions to reevaluate, catch your breath or re-focus = but to STOP completely is never an option. You owe it to yourself to live the life you have always wanted.

To stay motivated and remain persistent is not an easy task, but it can be your daily CHOICE!

Thoughtful Thursday: It's a Hard Knock Life

I had the honor of being a guest blogger on the web site LorensWorld.com (A Business, Information and Motivational web site created by Designer and Internet Mogul - Loren Ridinger). This piece was previously published there. I have been thinking about the concept lately and wanted to share it here again:

We all get “knocked around” by life via disappointments, circumstances or repercussions from the decisions we have made. If I had a dime for every time I have heard the phrase “it’s not fair”; or until a few years ago, a dime for every time I used it. The statement is true though, much of what is thrown at us in life could potentially fall under the “it’s not fair” category. But what if today we acknowledge this to be a truth, release the expectation of life being ‘fair’ and get right back up in order to move forward. I have found that one does not seem to be so disappointed if you have no expectations to begin with.

What if when life knocks you down, instead of lying there and playing your “it’s not fair” card you STAND UP and evaluate what you STAND FOR? And who you will Stand by? Or conversely who will stand by you? How you Stand up for yourself makes all the difference in where you stand in life. Turn life’s unfairness into the most invaluable item(s) you have – LESSONS. It can be a time for evaluation; not a ‘why me’ moment but what can I learn from this? How can I grow? You can stand up and be a teacher; lead by example and transform your circumstances into a positive lesson or a motivator to do or be better. The knock downs don’t have to be knock outs but can be viewed as an opportunity. Embrace the fact that life WILL knock you down, it is how you stand back up that matters. Like that old adage; if you stand for nothing you will fall for anything.

Creative Organization: TIPS

If you read this blog you will know that 2012 for me means 2 things: More ME time AND I am on a personal quest to turn my creatively disorganized self into little miss Organized!

To that end I am gathering EVERY piece of organizational information to make my life easier. I live in literal organized chaos and need to simplify my life to make it easier for me to prioritize and get it all done ... and done WELL.

I wanted to share a few household organizational tips that may help you "get it together" for 2012 and keep it that way. I always get forwards via e-mail and this one sent recently by my mom gave me a few AH-HA Organizational moments.

Got a ton of unsightly, left over grocery bags? No worries; Re-use a "Wet Wipes" or "Baby Wipe" container and store your bags. Take it a step further all you DIY-er's and decoupage(découpage) the containers with custom images and/or designs to match your home decor.

Use your old bread tags to organize all of the cords under your desk. They make the perfect size labels too.

What once was a muffin baking pan is now a craft caddy for the kids!! Magnets hold the plastic cups down to make them tip-resistant.

Brilliant space-saver: install a tension rod to hang your spray bottles.

Linen Storage: Store your bedding sets inside one of the matching pillow cases. No more hunting around for a match and everything is all stored neatly together.

SEASONAL STORAGE SOLUTIONS:

They Sky's The Limit: Use wire to make a space overhead to store gift wrap rolls against the ceiling, rather than cluttering up the floor.

Re-Purpose your egg cartons to store all your Christmas decor.

MY PERSONAL FAV's:

Magnetic storage for all your loose metal items, like bobby pins, tweezers, clippers and more! Use a magnetic strip and mount behind a vanity door.

Tired of finding a place to store all of your children's stuffed toys?? I know I am. Avoid this completely by installing a Velcro strip to the wall and attaching all the soft toys ... I wonder what my daughters room would look like with a border of stuffed toys. Oh, the possibilities!

I'm DOWN with INCLUSION

Let me start by extending a BIG THANK YOU to NoahsDad.com for starting a much needed public dialogue about inclusion and equality for all children but specifically children with Down Syndrome. For me, inclusion is implied considering Down Syndrome has been part of the human condition since the beginning of time, but it turns out there are still a lot of closed minds and hearts out there.

Noah's Dad (Rick) hosts and writes a blog that chronicles his and his wife's life with their beautiful son Noah. He recently posted his thoughts and a thank you to Target for including a model in a recent ad campaign who happens to have Down Syndrome. He also thanked the retail giant Nordstrom for including the same model in their recent Anniversary catalogue. I am HAPPY to report that this post caught the attention of mainstream media which in turn has opened up a dialogue about inclusion, embracing our differences and celebrating them. It is through education and awareness we can start to make and see societal changes.

My son Blake has Down Syndrome and I am so PROUD that he does. He can be a representative of equality, life and LOVE in our judgemental world. Blake and I have committed our voices to the fight for EQUALITY and INCLUSION for ALL regardless of gender, race, perceived disability, sexual orientation or any other "difference" from the herd mentality. 3 cheers for NOAH and NOAHSDAD.COM for starting this important dialogue. I am excited to see what power the media has for more inclusion for members of the Down Syndrome community.

This media coverage makes me excited because I now wonder are we really evolving as a human race? as a society? are our generic and limited views of beauty changing? are big corporations now going to send a message of inclusion and equality? rather than corporate greed and a herd mentality? I look forward to getting these questions answered. In the meantime organizations like the NDSS (National Down Syndrome Society) and people like Rick are working to educate and inspire the world to open up their hearts and in turn their eyes.

Opportunity

Opportunity can be defined as "a favorable or advantageous circumstance or combination of circumstances" and/or "a favorable or suitable occasion or time". I recently had been presented with a situation that at first glance was at the worst possible time AND the circumstances were certainly not advantageous to me; but things are not always what they seem. Upon further reflection what was first perceived as a road block was an opportunity in disguise. An opportunity for positive change in my life and for personal growth. All of the work will be up to me to convert my current truth into an opportunity for personal evolution. My husband, the perpetual truth teller in my life was the catalyst to the opportunity. 2012: Bring It On

Another year is upon us, ripe with possibility and promise. Are you and your perspective ready? I truly believe our happiness and level of personal success is directly correlated with our perspectives and attitudes. It is less about WHAT happens to us or what we experience and more about how we perceive it and what attitude we adapt.

I personally perceive 2012 as a grand opportunity. Some people that I have talked to are happy to see 2011 go and are not very optimistic about what lies ahead for them (more stress, etc).

The most positive thing about the dawning of a new day is the chance to turn your perspective and consequently your life around. CHEERS to that!

How I'm going to prepare for the New Year:

* Set realistic goals and expectations for 2012 so as to not set myself up for failure or disappointment.

* One Day At A Time - it is great to look down the road to see what is ahead but I want to work harder to be more "present" and enjoy each day as it is presented.

* Put myself back "on the list" - I cannot be a good mother, wife or business person if there is little or no time for SELF CARE.

May 2012 bring EACH of you LOVE and TRUE HAPPINESS. May you work to realize your goals and dreams no matter how big or small. Bring it on 2012!!! I know you have a lot of excitement in store for us all.

Niki Taylor was one of the defining faces of fashion in the 1990's beginning her career at the age of 14. Literally you could not pick up a magazine in that decade without seeing a cover, editorial or advertisement featuring Niki. She has had hundreds of covers, walked some of the worlds most famous runways and appeared in the ad campaigns of the leading fashion designers and largest brands in he world. She is also a classic beauty, wife and mother of four.

5 Fashion Facts:
* Taylor's first magazine cover was an issue of Seventeen (August 1989) at 14.

* The following year, at 15, she graced the cover of Vogue.

* In 1996 Taylor appeared on the cover of the six major American women's fashion and fitness magazines in the same month: Allure, Vogue, ELLE, Marie Claire, Self, & Shape

* She was the first spokes model under the age of 18 to sign with a major company - Niki was signed to Cover Girl Cosmetics in 1992

I remember and LOVED her cosmo covers shot by Francesco Scavullo,
her work with Gianni Versace and her shout out in the RuPaul track "SuperModel" (Yes, I had the cassette" - Sashay - Shante). Besides being a busy mom Niki takes time to give back to organizations such as Victory Junction a camp that enriches the lives of children with chronic medical conditions or serious illnesses as well as the American Red Cross. I had a chance to ask Niki my Style Maven questions;

LISA: Can you describe your personal Style aesthetic AND attitude about fashion?

NIKI: Simply functional and eclectic depending on what day it is and what I am doing but always within those boundries regardless of relaxed or formal.

LISA: What are the key components / pieces in your closet?

NIKI: Jeans definitely, Sue London flats, a great pair of boots, flowey blouses, men’s t-shirts, Chanel jacket & Lauren Hutton suit.

LISA: How do you feel about Vintage Clothing and Accessories?

NIKI: Since I have small children again I don’t wear as much accessories but do love them. So great to go hunt for those amazing vintage pieces for your wardrobe. I personally love to do it and enjoy wearing them.

LISA: What are your favorite Vintage pieces (Clothing and/or Accessories)? Do you only wear designer vintage?

NIKI: Love vintage, cool blouses, 50’s, 60’s, 70’s shirts & jackets and Chanel Cardigans.

NIKI: Lots of cardigans and scarfs this year. Main focus is grey, black and pops of color and of course a great pair of jeans.

As we evolve and age we should expect to see some evolution in our wardrobes, taste in food & drink, hair styles as well as skin care regimes. I for one was ready for a change for my skin when I had to FACE IT: RAW! Model/Actress/Author Carol Alt has a new line of skin care that is RAW, all active ingredients never heated above 115°

I have been vegetarian for almost 4.5 years now and as I age care more and more what I am putting in my body and on my skin. When I heard about her new line I was so EXCITED to try it! Carol has spread her love and enthusiasm for raw food by educating people over the last decade via her 2 books and her lifestyle. We've come a long way baby... I was looking through some Vintage advertisements and it made me think about how much women's roles have changed over the years. Our hopes and dreams are bigger too, but not big enough in my opinion. I still see women who are beautiful, capable, and fabulous still falling into the roles that other people in their lives have for them (namely men but parents, friends, etc.)

We have swapped our Hoovers for iPad's but have we as women really evolved out of the gender specific roles of the past? or have we just piled more onto an already full plate? Maybe it is not the roles that changed just the perception of those roles. I still have to push my "Hoover" around, make dinner, laundry, school drop off, bathing kids, grocery shopping, WORK (building my business), and maintain something that resembles a social life. I help bring home the bacon, cook it in the pan, serve it AND clean up after.

I'm also proud of some women's evolution as mothers into multi-taskin mammas and MOMprenerurs too.

I honestly believe that we can have it all and do it all; it just depends on how much we want it ALL! I also believe that the concept of "balancing" it all is totally deceptive and non existent, created by an over worked woman to give her peers hope of achieving this allusive balance to hold on for one more day and give her the strength to keep going.

I'm thankful for my husband as he picks up some slack with the children, cleaning and other household duties out of pure love as I build my business and multi-task. Maybe we have evolved to share our roles in order to make the full plate palatable?

I wanted to acknowledge how we in today's society have made our full plates functionally FABULOUS!

Take pride ladies on how far we have come, how much we do and how far we can go! This holiday season is one of the busiest as we trim the tree, shop, bake, and entertain on top of our regular daily grind! Take pause this holiday to reflect on everything you have accomplished this year ... and what amazing things await you in 2012

Christmas: Decking The Halls

This Christmas season I have been very busy juggling all of my roles and responsibilities; planning Christmas for 2 households, preparing for a trip to Canada and business too. There is not too much time left over to deck the halls in my usual, "over the top" manner. I wanted to share a few quick recipe's and tips for decking your halls in an efficient but unique manner.

The Music:

I love an eclectic mix between the past and present. Holiday music in the background is essential to keep me motivated (since I now live where there is no snow). I have my go-to iTunes playlist of my favourite Christmas songs including; Mistle Toe & Holly (Frank Sinatra), Santa Baby (Ertha Kitt), The Christmas Song (Nat King Cole), Silent Night (Lisa Marie Presley) I'll be Home for Christmas (The Carpenters), Happy Christmas (war is over) (John Lennon), Rockin Around The Christmas Tree (Brenda Lee), Holly Jolly Christmas (Burl Ives), Silver Bells (Bing Crosby & Carole Richards), Christmas Eve in Sarajevo (Trans Siberian Orchestra) and several songs performed by a full orchestra!

The Food:

I had an early Christmas celebration with my family here in the USA (before I depart for my Canadian Christmas). I had to pull it together in a flash.

Baking:

Red Velvet Cupcakes & mini-cake: Good ole Betty Crocker supplied the quick and easy mixture for the red velvet cupcakes. I used the cream cheese frosting in the can by Pillsbury. It gives you the capability to create designs on the cupcakes/cakes. I bakes a dozen and wrote the word CHRISTMAS, and used the others to "sample" ;)I used the excess batter to make a mini-cake, which I monogrammed using the frosting and arranged on a try with a Christmas napkin and a tray I had on-hand.
Melting Snow Man Cookies: I have seen these quick and easy cookies on-line and thought it would be a really fun activity to share with the kids. On-line all the recipe's call for sugar cookies, which made no sense to me. I thought; If a snow man was really melting in the heat he would be on sand right? So I made Peanut Butter Cookies instead. Use white frosting to create the "melting" effect on the cookie. Soften the large marshmallows for a few seconds in the microwave then stick on the cookie. Use a decorative gel to create the face, arms, and accessories of your snow men/women.
Snacks: I picked up a bag of Mission festive Tortilla Chips in Green & Red, placed in a Silver metallic salad bowl on the table. Cadbury FINALLY has created a Christmas edition of my FAV chocolate treat "the mini egg" - they now come in red, white and green candy coated balls. I fill Martini glasses with these mini pieces of heaven for my Christmas Table.

Quick Dinner Plan: I quickly pulled together a FAB dinner with Buitoni Cheese Tortellini (boil and serve), Garlic Marinara sauce (I add veggies to the canned sauces if I don't have time to make a sauce from scratch), top with freshly grated Parmesan cheese. Garlic bread with cheese (I grabbed one from my local grocer, scraped off all that nasty excess butter, add my own garlic and cheese - freshly grated Parmesan cheese) and don't forget your veggies. I served a giant garden salad; mixed greens, tomato, onion, cucumber, green/red peppers and garnish w avocado slice. My daughter skips the salad and opts for cucumber slices instead (Served in a festive Rudolph plate of course).
Always add a little bit of bubbly .. champagne, sparkling water, cider or pop(soda) will do too. No matter what your choice bubbly beverage, always serve in a flute!

Decor:

I use a mix of Christmas decor in my home during the holidays. I use scented pine cones and Christmas balls to fill large glass vases. I use silver chargers (commonly used for plates) as bases for displays of pillar candles. I also made my own tree topper!

DIY Tree Topper:

I re-used the pewter H monogram that I had atop my wedding cake in 2008 as the focal point of my tree topper. Use a monogram for your family or take some sentimental piece from your collection of keep-sakes to use. Try a framed photo of your family or an item that represents them, a memory you all share or a memento from a family vacation!

Each year I add something to the piece. I purchased a small wreath that was made from branches with faux-snow, plastic pine and faux-snow dusted cranberries. You could also go for a fresh topper and collect fallen branches and twist them into a wreath (fasten with thin wire) and dry real cranberries. Using silver ribbon from the dollar store my mom (a few years ago) added a giant bow. I have since found the same ribbon and added the long pieces that are attached to he topper that cascade down my tree (in lieu of traditional garland). This year, also from the dollar store I added red sparkle sprays of festive foliage. No matter how you deck your halls Christmas is all about FAMILY, FRIENDS and spending time. I hope you are able to spend time with your loved ones and enjoy the last moments of 2011 with them.

We all "know" that we live in a world of consumption and destruction. I LOVE this video (The Story of STUFF). It is a simple educational tool to really make you take pause and look at the consumption in your home/life. They make their points using a very simplistic format so everyone can understand. As we approach Christmas I wanted to share this video.

I wanted to provoke some thought into this issue as the more we ignore it, the more damage is being done to the planet we will leave for our children.

I have done my shopping. I have purchased recycled items, vintage clothing & accessories, items up-cycled and re-created by crafters and also items from the big box stores. It is unrealistic in the world we live in that we do not shop and consume. Our world is designed this way. We however have the option as to WHERE we consume and WHAT we consume.

Let's be honest and take accountability, we are ALL consumers. We are ALL part of the problem; but we ALL can be part of the solution too.

Consider these questions:
Are you a buy, use, throw-away person?
Are you a buy, use, re-purpose, re-use?
Do you buy previously loved items? re-purpose and re-use them?
Do you shop big box stores only? or from small businesses, crafters, artisans, and/or thrift stores?

Do all your items have to be NEW? or just NEW to you?

What do you do with your STUFF when you are done with it?

My business (EVOLUTION VINTAGE) is recycling fashion; re-styling clothing and accessories. The re-use of these items and styling them current keep them out of the landfills.

In 2012 I want to become more creative than I all ready am. I want to make a commitment to Re-purpose and re-use more and consume LESS! and in turn become a great example for my children. What about you?

3 years ago today on a Central Coast beach was the day my life changed. I was blessed with the opportunity to marry and commit myself to the love of my life and soul mate.
I used to think that terms like "soul mate" were a total Hallmark Cliche, until my wedding day.

David and I met randomly in Nashvile, TN in June of 2006 and the rest, as they say is history. We had the Canada/US border between us and several other factors which did not dissuade our destiny. As I live and breathe I KNOW David is who I am supposed to spend my life with. He is the most amazing husband, friend, business partner, co-parent and person, period. I could not have asked for a better father for our 2 love babies; Blake & Kaleigh Rain. After a long road we were finally able to face each other, Dec 8, 2008 at Spooner's Cove; and make our lifelong promise to one another. The day still seems like a dream.

David, I truly love you. You have made my life come to life and for all that you have given me I will be forever grateful. Your love, support, kindness, respect and generosity mean more to me than words could ever convey. My angel, my all, my other self. CHEERS to 50 more years!! I sincerely look forward to each day as we walk our life path together ...

Soup's On

Now that there is a chill in the air (even in Southern California) I wanted to share the recipe for a quick and fabulous Vegetarian/Vegan soup that I made one afternoon from item's I thought would taste great together. Thankfully they did!

Ingredients:

Bok Choy
Spinach
Leek (and/or Onion)
Bean Sprouts
Veggie Broth
Frank's Red Hot Sauce
Garlic Clove(s) (and/or powder)

So Simple to make - customize it into a Soup or Stoup - Soup with more broth than veggies or Stoup with more veggies than broth, like a stew/soup=STOUP.

PREP: Wash and chop veggies.

Tip: Let your Leek's swim! - Leeks are a layered root veggie that gathers dirt & grit between the layers. Cut into circles, separate layers and float in water. All the dirt/grit will sink to the bottom of the bowl. Drain and add to the soup. I saute the onions/leeks first with a little olive oil and chopped fresh garlic pieces, then add the bok choy and the spinach last.

In a separate pot I'm creating my broth from bouillon cubes (Vegetable) or you can buy Organic or regular veggie stock in a carton. I add it to the partially sauteed veggies in the large pot.

Cook together adding more garlic chunks or powder to taste. I also add a few splashes of Frank's Red Hot Cayenne Pepper Sauce. I like it SPICY!

Let it simmer on the stove as long as you like! it could be ready in a flash or simmer on low all afternoon until you are ready to feast!

It is figure AND animal friendly! ENJOY!

I love beautiful images of all kinds; editorial fashion, landscape, interesting people or just random or ordinary things in life we take for granted. But when a photographer captures it in that moment it becomes amazing again; like a tree with changing leaves. In my "Behind The Lens" series I want to highlight some photographers who are visionaries and who are creating beautiful images from the world that surrounds them.

My first feature is Hayley Blackburn of Hayley Marie Photography. She is a local photographer here on the Central Coast of California but hails from the Gold Coast of Australia. She specializes in the use of nature and natural lighting to create her beautiful images. She loves fashion, nature and personal portraits.

I had the pleasure of working with her on a few jobs/shoots from a styling perspective as well as having her shoot my family and images with my new son Blake.
I had a chance to chat with Hayley about her business and passion;

LISA: Where did your love for photography come from?

HAYLEY: Ever since I can remember I have loved taking photographs of everything and anything. As a little girl growing up I loved to spend my pocket money on those little disposable cameras and snap away.I have aways loved Art....I love colors, shapes, textures but mostly I love to see the way the sun radiates and lights up objects and people so individually beautiful. But I have never been able to illustrate my art very well on paper or canvas. Photography gives me that avenue where i can express the beauty in life that I see.

LISA: What/Who inspires you?

HAYLEY: I am fortunate enough to live in a beautiful part of the world here on the Central Coast of California. I am definitely inspired every day I step out my front door and see the sparkling blue Pacific to the west and the rolling green hills to the East. There are a lot of people and amazing photographers who inspire me.The late Herb Ritts would have to be my all time favourite photographer. I am in awe each and every time I come across a shot of his. My 3 year old daughter is also a big inspiration to me. I love trying to capture her fun, carefree and innocent nature.
LISA: What is your favourite subject matter to shoot? and why?

HAYLEY: At the moment I am dabbling a little bit in everything. From model portfolios to fashion catalogues, family portraits to landscapes. But I must say my favourite type of shoot would have to be a fashion shoot. I love the freedom of imagination that can be expressed when concocting up the theme that best showcases the style of fashions to be photographed. I like to get a bit adventurous, and the models I have been working with lately are always up for the challenge....and that is FUN!!

LISA: What's next for Hayley Marie Photography (H.M.P)?

HAYLEY: Well being a relatively new kid on the photography block, I am looking forward to what the future holds for me and excited to find out which way the tides will take me. I have just brought out my debut calendar, "Seascapes of the Central Coast", it is a 12 month collection of my favourite Seascapes near my home. Proceeds from the sale of my calendar will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. I am also heading back to my beautiful homeland of Australia for a couple of months in the New Year....where I plan to expand my portfolio.
But all in all, I am hopeful that 2012 will be a year full of exciting new beginnings, opportunities and advancements for H.M.P.

LISA: What piece of advice would you give any creative entrepreneurs?

HAYLEY: My advice for any creative entrepreneur is (and funny that you ask me this) but the other day when it all just seemed too overwhelming with all the demands that creating a new business involves......a fabulous wise woman said to me....."It sucks when you work so hard and it feels like it's all for nothing; but remember it's the price of doing business and building your business. If it was easy everyone would do it. Hang in there and keep on moving."(Lisa G, Evolution-Vintage)

LISA: One DIY tip for all the aspiring photographers out there - can you tell us something about getting a perfect photo? OR any other tips for the lay person who takes lots of personal photos?

HAYLEY: LIGHT is EVERYTHING!! I find that I get my best shots about 20min before sunset. This beautiful golden light is very complimentary for everyone! Shooting at midday in broad daylight is a No No unless you are going for the squinty, shadowy eyelook thing.
I always try to look for that unique shot that no one else has taken. Yes it may be a beautiful sunset right in front of you, but try and make it a little different to the average sunset shot by trying different angles and compositions. Sometimes by adding an unexpected object in the frame can make it all that much more exciting. Just don't be shy....SNAP SNAP SNAP away!! Sometimes the best shots are the least expected ones!

Thanksgiving (and other holidays)always makes me stop to take a life inventory; count my blessings and share my gratitude with everyone in my life. I'm left wondering why we all don't do this all year? It literally took me a few moments to tweet, update facebook status, send a group MMS and make a few calls to say "Thank You" and "I Love You". During the holiday season I really do take time to look around. I have observed that people are much more polite, courteous, thoughtful, expressive and kind. I wonder why it takes a Hallmark holiday to make us all become human again (this includes the Christmas holiday season which I guess in America officially starts tomorrow, Black Friday style!).

Today, again I am going to take this digital opportunity to say THANKS to everyone who has blessed my life; my beautiful children Kaleigh Rain and Blake, my amazing husband who loves and supports me like no other, my family and friends spread throughout North America .... The Canucks and Yanks. I am also going to make a pledge to be more aware and expressive regarding my gratitude. The best gift I was given; this amazing life I have (thanks mom). I am completely guilty of letting my fast paced life sweep me away in a sea of responsibility, work and obligation with perceived little time left for expressing my appreciation to those who are a part of my universe. This also extends to random strangers and 'the little things'. There are really no excuses not to be present, slow down and say THANKS.

Life is full of struggle, tough times, disappointments and not so amazing moments but it is the thankfulness and appreciation for the great ones that makes life a truly extraordinary experience! NONE of us navigate this life alone. So THANK YOU to all of you who have loved me, helped me, laughed and cried with me, supported me and those who continue to travel with me down my path!

I love that EVOLUTION REVOLUTION reaches the PC's, laptops and mobile devices around the world. A super Stylish reader in Paris, France reached out recently with her new book: "Decades of Style" (By Lexi DeRock). A Step-by-Step hair and makeup guide to days gone by.

Just as I at Evolution Vintage style fashions past current, Lexi is bringing back the Chic 60's and 70's for the modern woman.

She enjoys being an educator and sharing her knowledge. In her words; "Do a girls hair and she'll look good for the night. Teach a girl to do her own hair, and she'll look great for a lifetime."

Her new book was a GREAT read! besides the makeup, hair tips and tricks I loved her use of iconic images and quotations (I'm obsessed with quotations). You can browse her book and tap into your alter-ego; Are you The Studio 54 Sweetheart? The Boho Baby? The Cabaret Singer? Luckily you don't have to pick just one - You can utilize Lexi's guide through 2 decades of hair and makeup and use it over and over again. Information on each look as well as each decade are provided in a FAB and reader friendly way.

I had the chance to chat with Lexi about her book and her style.

LISA: What inspired the book?

LEXI: A very talented painter friend of mine, Marcus McAllister, was working on an art book with my friend and editor Alicia LeBlanc, and a little green monster reared it's head and said "I want a book too! Me, meee!" because it sounded like a fun project. So, I pitched her the idea because I have just always loved vintage styles and wanted to share them with other people in a way that was easy to follow and fun.

LISA: What is your favourite decade for fashion/hair/makeup? and why?

LEXI: I'm not sure that I have a favorite. I do love the 20s, 30s and 50s, but I think the 60s are really one of my faves. The hair is dramatic and fun, and so is the makeup...and the attitude is so liberated and full of spirit. It's so elegant and wild at the same time.

LISA: Why the 60's & 70's?

LEXI: I intend to write books covering all of the decades I love, but started with the 60s and 70s because, while all the looks have their timelessness, these eras seem to be especially relevant again. You see the 60s popping up all over the place like in Mad Men or The Kennedys series, and the 70s styles are all up and down the runways in this season's fall/winter collections. Maybe it is the spirit of revolution in the air all over the world that is making people want to dress and style like the revolutionaries of the 60s and 70s, but something seems to have sparked our interest in the chunk of time and I couldn't be more for it!

LISA: Who are your personal style icons?

LEXI: I've always loved glamour and performance and people whose style is over-the-top and playful. One of my faves is Katherine Hepburn: glamorous, but also casual and strong. Brigitte Bardot inspires a style in the book and she is definitely one of my favorites for hair styles. So sexy and so French. But I also love people with a bit of a harder rock & roll style mixed in, and I love body art, so Kat Von Dee is one of my favorite style icons too.

LISA: How did you get your start in hair & makeup?

LEXI: I started doing hair and makeup as a teenager in theater and have always loved it. I was always that girl cutting and coloring all my girlfriends' hair in high school. When I decided to make my career of it, I attended the Aveda Institute in Minneapolis MN which was a fantastic school. From there I continued to work in the US until 2007, when I decided to move to Paris and work more on the fashion side of things. After four years in Paris, I decided it was time for a change so I am currently in the process of relocating to Melbourne, Australia, this December. I'm really looking forward to seeing where that takes me.

LISA: What are your favourite makeup and hair products?

LEXI: I love hair and makeup so when I go into a beauty supplier or a store like Sephora, I am just like a kid in a candy shop (someday I'll get organized enough to figure out how to write it all off as a business expense!). I am not a brand loyalist and there are lots of things I like from a number of companies, but I do have a few favorites. I love L'Oreal Double Extend mascara and have used it for maybe 10 years at this point. There are others I like too, but my go-to is always Double Extend. I love the liquid and creme blushes that have come out in the last few years, and my favorite one is by Benefit. They have three shades now, a red (benetint), pink (posietint) and their newest one and my favorite which is a tangerine/mango sort of color called Cha-Cha tint. As for hair products, I do love Freeze hairspray by Schwartzkopf because it doesn't flake and it's not too heavy...Goldilocks would have said "It's just right," and I would be inclined to agree.

LISA: Describe your personal style aesthetic. What are you wearing this fall/winter?

LEXI: I guess I have a mixture of those styles in my wardrobe. I love vintage for clothes and for my hair and makeup, and I also love the dark, layered looks the French wear with all the scarves and hats and things, very chic...but I like my style to have a bit more of a rock & roll edge to it. I'm a fan of skulls and studs and leather and things like that, but softened up by a sweet retro hairdo and a cute vintage scarf which keeps it from being too harsh.

I love the vastness of textiles. I come across the most interesting on my quest to re-style fashion's past current for my clients at EVOLUTION VINTAGE. In addition to textiles there are thousands of interesting patterns and color combinations; none more classic than

THE POLKA DOT!

I recently added this brown dress with white polka dots to the Evolution Vintage collection and immediately was transported back to the Polo game scene in Pretty Woman.

The origins of the Polka Dot as a textile is not known and widely disputed. Some say that its origins lie with the "polka" dance whose origins were in Europe in the 1830's. Walt Disney has also been given credit for the print for Minnie Mouse's dress and bow. I read a story recently about an ink spot falling on the drawing of Minnie as he was contemplating her look - plaid was too hard to animate (then done by hand ) and he wanted something bold for her.

Lisa's Library: Bauby's Brave Book

Someone just asked me "What are you reading?" and if I had any book suggestions ... I will share a selection from my library periodically via EVOLUTION REVOLUTION. Let me warn you that I am obsessed with NON-Fiction, Memoirs, Autobiography, Bio's, Texts and reference materials!

My first suggestion is an inspirational read called "The Diving Bell and The Butterfly" By Jean-Dominique Bauby. Scottish Songstress Angela McCluskey suggested the book to me about 5 years ago. I immediately ordered it on-line.

SYNOPSIS: "In 1995, Jean-Dominique Bauby was the editor-in-chief of French Elle, the father of two young children, a 44-year-old man known and loved for his wit, his style, and his impassioned approach to life. By the end of the year he was also the victim of a rare kind of stroke to the brainstem. After 20 days in a coma, Bauby awoke into a body which had all but stopped working: only his left eye functioned, allowing him to see and, by blinking it, to make clear that his mind was unimpaired. Almost miraculously, he was soon able to express himself in the richest detail: dictating a word at a time, blinking to select each letter as the alphabet was recited to him slowly, over and over again. In the same way, he was able eventually to compose this extraordinary book."

Let Bauby's words inspire you and as you read them know that he blinked each letter, one at a time to form each word! A totally inspirational an quick read at 131 pages. How brave and amazing! The strength of the human spirit never ceases to amaze me.

A foreign language film "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" was made based on the book (FYI: Angela's Uber Talented Husband Paul Cantelon is American composer of contemporary classical music and a film score composer. He is also a violinist, pianist, and accordionist, who is also a founding member of American alternative band Wild Colonials. He composed the score for the film!)
I have yet to enjoy the film. Has anyone seen it? It is on my "to watch list" for sure.

I hope you enjoy the book as much as I did. I re-read it from time to time and it has a permanent place in Lisa's Library.

Dresscue 911: From Dress to Tunic Top

Remember the seamstress? The lady who has mad skills in the sewing department. She can hem, she can mend she can RE-STYLE and RE-PURPOSE your wardrobe... or your potential wardrobe at your direction. The only limit is your creativity and imagination.

I know we are all desensitized by the mass made and mass marketed fashion already available in a wide range of styles, but what ever happened to alterations?

The seamstress I use for Evolution Vintage; YONG is a whiz at helping me make the old new again and bringing new life to old threads.

Case in point. I dresscued a 1980's dress in a shade of Emerald Green because the color is FAB, the neckline reminds me of the Theirry Mugler suits of the 80's and overall the dress can be re-styled current (the premise of EV).
I noticed that it needed some TLC and FAST (due to 2 tears in both the back and front of the skirt)! I was at a fashion crossroads. I could have the dress altered to a smaller size (original size was 10) or I could have the dress cut into a Tunic Top. I thought there is a shortage of Vintage in sizes larger than 6 so I opted for a Dresscue RE-DO. A tunic top it was - saving the little peplum/pleating in the front.

The Result:
Now it can be styled with jeans, leggings or a skirt!

Style Maven Series: Chynna Phillips

Chynna is best known for being 1/3 of the 1990's group Wilson Phillips but this maven is MUCH more! She is an actress, philanthropist, wife to William (Billy) Baldwin and Multi-Tasking Mother of 3!

Her early success as a singer/songwriter came with the release of Wilson Phillips debut album of the same name, selling over 8 million copies and spawning hits like "Hold On", "Your In Love" and "Release Me". I had this album on cassette and listened in my bright yellow walk man and matching Polo by Ralph Lauren jacket at 13! I rocked! She has come a long way baby since she had us all "hold on for one more day" but it is not over for Wilson Phillips. They are ready to release an album called "DEDICATED" a musical journey into the past. The songs from the band their parents made famous in the 60's & 70's - Chynna's Mother & Father: John & Michelle Phillips of The Mamma's and the Pappa's & Carnie & Wendy Wilson's Father Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys. The album will be released March 2010 and is available for PRE-SALE HERE They are shooting a reality show for the TV Guide channel and launching a mini-tour this December singing songs from Christmas in Harmony.

She Recently ROCKED the Dance floor on Dancing with the Stars where she was prematurely eliminated due to a minor mis-step. Another time where America got it WRONG! but let's face it, they are also the same people who elected and RE-elected George W. so my expectations to begin with are LOW. That coupled with the public letting the likes of Bristol Palin "hold on" for a lot longer than one more day confirms my belief that DWTS voting is NOT based talent or potential. You had MY vote Chynna & Tony! #JustSayin

I for one thought Chynna's performances were AH-MAZING and I have full respect for anyone who can get up in front of MILLIONS of people, step out of their comfort zone and go for it. Chynna told me "DWTS empowered me as it made me realize that I am capable of more than I ever thought I was capable of achieving. It inspired me as it helped me realize that if you can give a little bit of extra effort to a particular focus, you will see amazing results. This goes far beyond just learning the jive. If you can show up in your life, and invest just 5% more of yourself to yourself, it can mean the difference between success and stagnancy."

Turns out her heart is as big as her talent(s)! She dedicates time and resources to a charity close to her heart; an orphanage in Tijuana, Mexico called Los Angelitos. It's a very small orphanage with just over 35 kids with Chynna as their only champion. Los Angelitos Orphanage is a children’s home that provides underprivileged children the opportunity to experience secure living conditions, nurtured upbringing, schooling, and a pleasant family life. All are either orphans or abandoned children that would otherwise be living on the streets of Tijuana.

LISA: Can you describe your personal Style aesthetic AND attitude about fashion?

CHYNNA: Clothes should fit. I don't like wearing clothes that are baggy and loose unless I'm at home in my house with the doors locked. Whatever you decide to wear should be flattering and it's up to you to figure out what looks best for your body shape. I love clothing with classic lines, simple style. I adore colors, but I'm not very adventurous with them: it's something I hope to get better at.

LISA: What are the key components / pieces in your closet?

CHYNNA: I love my soft, thin-knit, fitted sweaters: I can wear a fitted sweater with a skirt, jeans, or slacks. It's a very versatile piece to have in your closet.

LISA: How do you feel about Vintage Clothing and Accessories?

CHYNNA: I adore vintage clothing and accessories, but I truly believe you have to be schooled in vintage wear. There are rules that need to be followed - vintage is not a free-for-all. There's a science to it: you have to find the right pieces, you need to have that eye. You also have to understand how to mix and match the articles with contemporary pieces… it's a thin line to walk. You don't want to overdo it and look like you just stepped back into the future after a ride in Marty McFly's Delorean. One thing I will admit is that I do not have that trained eye. When I try to include vintage in my day-to-day, I always feel like I end up looking like an old lady.

LISA: What are your favorite Vintage pieces (Clothing and/or Accessories)? Do you only wear designer vintage?

CHYNNA: I have an vintage, oversized men's Rolex watch that I wear a lot. I love it. I love designer vintage on the red carpet, but no, I don't exclusively wear designer vintage. I think it's fun to explore second hand shops to find unique pieces that have managed to stick around all this time later.

LISA: What are you wearing this Fall/Winter? Tell our readers the key elements for your F/W 2012 wardrobe

CHYNNA: Tory Burch's line - as usual - is ridiculously chic and completely wearable. I feel pretty in every Tory piece I own. Her clothes capture a woman's beauty and her pieces mix and match effortlessly - she makes pieces that can be worn all day and into the night. Ridiculously versatile and absolutely gorgeous.in Tory Burch

Another favorite line hogging my closet space is Paul Sinclair's line Sinclair 10. It's a hot, and new and sold exclusively at Saks. His pieces are both incredibly affordable and almost effortlessly refined. His twist on a white button-down dress shirt will blow your mind. His are the clothes you can dress up with a certain piece of jewelry or dress down with certain pair of shoes.

Overall, I think you need to have 3-4 simple dresses of different styles (and not all black!), separates that you are able to mix and match, and a few pair of worn in, "wow these make me feel sexy" jeans, and one or two hand bags that go with everything.

LISA: If you could give women 1 piece of STYLE advice, what would it be?

CHYNNA: Wear clothes that fit! I think it's so important. People generally upsize when they shop for clothes. Don't! Bigger, in this case, is not better (no matter if you are a 2 or a 20, if your clothes hang off of you, not only do you lose your sense of style, but you lose your sense of self! - hidden underneath too much extra fabric!!). Also, don't be afraid to layer.

Many women frequently come to me with Style questions, advice and help. I wanted to create a new series for EVOLUTION REVOLUTION that has styling tips, tricks, ideas and DIY projects to help make the most of your wardrobe and your looks.

My super stylish friend and Evolution Vintage client Sydney helped me demonstrate a few easy looks you can put together using belts, brooches, men's neck ties and scarves.

Some of you may be a little shy about mixing pattern and print but just have fun! Try something new and take a risk. There are no "RULES" when it comes to fashion; it is all about an individuals perception and perspective... and a little courage!

A PASSION for PRINTS:

Try a tribal print scarf with a statement brooch. HOW? Fold and pin the scarf at the desired width (depending on garment). Not a size 5? no problem! Pin the scarf at the side seams of your dress - It is not required to wrap all the way around and meet at the back to get the look.

I LOVE FASHION! but I have a special place in my SOLE for SHOES!! I am always interested in searching for what's new and what's old to re-style new. I have to say that in the high-end shoe biz there is a MAJOR stand out in shoe designer Ruthie Davis.
She is university educated and has had her feet firmly planted in the fashion biz since her days with Reebok in the mid-late 90's. She was then the VP of design and marketing for for UGG Australia, making the UGG boot chic and fashionable on a global scale. She moved onto the position of VP of Women's Footwear Design and Marketing at Tommy Hilfiger. She has since moved on to launch her own brand in 2005.

I had a chance to ask Ruthie a few questions about her personal and professional style.

LISA: What inspires you and your shoe designs?

RUTHIE: I'm inspired by architecture, pop culture, girls on the street, fashion editorial and all things that push the envelope - not in a dark edgy manner, but more in a sporty, sexy and racy eye catching way.

LISA: Describe your personal style aesthetic? What are the key components in your closet?

RUTHIE: I am all about sleek, minimal and aerodynamic fashion. I love the lines of buildings and lines of the human body. I like clothing and shoes that become one with the body - like a glove that moves with you. I don't take fashion too seriously and like to mix up a high-low look - with the shoes and bags being the "high" and the clothing being simple and affordable. While being girlie and glam, I also love a menswear or military flair in the mix - a little tom girl to the girlie. My closet is chock full of shoes and bags, skinny jeans, hot pants, mini dresses, fitted leather jackets and ski jackets, fitted tanks and some sexy silk buttons downs that I of course push up the sleeves and unbutton very low. I have to wear clothes that move with me or I get claustrophobic. lol.

LISA: How do you feel about Vintage clothing and/or accessories?

RUTHIE: I'm not going to lie that I'm not a vintage type girl, however, I love classics. I am into futurism and like new things. But I do love vintage jewelry because it is something that never ages. I have an amazing vintage Gucci bracelet and some Chanel and Hermes vintage that I am totally obsessed with! I also will always love anything from the Mod 60's or 70's Halston era. All of my designs always have some go-go boots and plastic fantastic in the mix!

LISA: Who is the RUTHIE DAVIS woman / client?

RUTHIE: I've always admired women who are confident, smart, funny and feel sexy in their own skin. It's the same unstoppable female that always resonates with me. She's a Bond Girl, an entrepreneur, an athlete or someone you pass on the street that you can't forget. Girls that make me want to want to dream even bigger inspire me.

LISA: What do you feel are the "Shoe Staples" women should have?

RUTHIE: Every woman needs her go to black leather platform bootie. She also needs a platform peep toe pump and a sandal and at least one pair of knee height "go go" type boots. All heels need to be 4" minimum in height. I don't believe in mid height heels. Other staples include flats for running around town in (I prefer tennis shoes and now have my own Ruthie Davis kicks), rain boots (I like Hunter) and Uggs for wearing only in the home or on the slopes. Oh and of course, you can never have enough pairs of heels!!

LISA: What shoes are you wearing for F/W 2011/12?

RUTHIE: My "Avatar" platform pumps in black kidskin and my "Microcompact" black booties are my absolute Fall 11staples. Blake 2 days old - Special Care

This was my reality in the first week of Blake's life. He fought to be here and it was his courage that inspired mine.

As I look back on the last 5 months of Blakes growth I am forced to think of my own. Never has my character been so tested, my constitution so tried or my values and belief system so rocked. What I have realized is that our energy, collectively is best spent celebrating our differences and not judging them. We are ALL guilty of it (Myself included). What a boring, generic world we would live in if we were all the "same" or "similar". Where applicable apply the label of LOVE only.

The comments I have received from my family, friends and most of all virtual strangers in the last 24 hours have been overwhelming to say the least. I cried a lot yesterday while reading the public comments as I realized how many amazing, genuine, good hearted people in there are in this world, more than enough to drown out the negative, ignorant ones.

I look forward to what the future will hold with Blake and the rest of my family. A future that is unknown for all of us. We will enjoy our moments together confident in the fact that the world may knock us DOWN but they will never take us OUT! This is just the first you are hearing from me but I fully intend on becoming a LOUD voice of advocacy and information as I strive to give children with DS a voice. Sharing facts, and feelings in an intelligent and empowering way! I am PROUD of my son's extra chromosome ... Turns out thankfully MORE is MORE xo

I Love LACE! It is a style element that can reflect two sides of the fashion coin; it can make a look soft and feminine or give it Edge and Rock'n'Roll. Lace is all over the place, but has a very Rich history. The concept originated with the Pharaohs using flax cloth decorated with colored threads working them into their own geometric designs.

The site ERAS OF ELEGANCE gives a fabulous and concise history of lace, how it was created and used in FASHION! "The ancient Greeks and Romans also ornamented their togas with colors or gold. A new garment needed no ornament about the immediate edge, but as it became worn and frayed, the threads had to be twisted and stitched together. Lace was derived from the twisting techniques used in decoration of the fringe ends of woven fabric.

True lace was not made until the late 15th and early 16th centuries. In Flanders, lace is called "kant", meaning border or edge. The birthplaces of lacemaking are generally recognized as Flanders and Italy. A true lace is created when a thread is looped, twisted or braided to others threads independently from a backing fabric. Originally linen, silk, gold, or silver threads were used. Now lace is often made with cotton thread. Manufactured lace may be made of synthetic fiber. A few modern artists makes lace with a fine copper or silver wire instead of thread.

For firm evidence of the origins of lace, written history indicates that Charles V decreed that lace making was to be taught in the schools and convents of the Belgian provinces. During this period of renaissance and enlightenment, the making of lace was firmly based within the domain of fashion. To be precise, it was designed to replace embroidery in a manner that could with ease transform dresses to follow different styles of fashion. Unlike embroidery, lace could be unsewn from one material to be replaced on another. Lace became fashionable on collars and cuffs for both sexes. Trade reached a peak in the 18th century.

Additionally, the vogue for lace also is recorded in pattern books as early as 1540. Early reticella designs usually included pointed or scalloped edges. By the time of Charles I, lace was used extravagantly for both costume and interior decorating; by 1643, lace making had become an established industry. In France patterns became increasingly more detailed and delicate; the light, flowery point de France was used for every conceivable decorative purpose. Later the laces of Alencon, Argentan, and Valencienne exemplified French style and design. The making of bobbin, pillow, or bone lace, which is mentioned as early as 1495, passed from Italy to Flanders, reaching its height of production there in the 18th century.

Machine-made lace first appeared circa 1760, and by 1813, a bobbinet machine was perfected. After 1832, cotton thread somewhat replaced linen. In the 20th century, many lace patterns have been revived and modified, and called Cluny lace. The chief modern centers of lace making are France, Belgium, England, Ireland, and Italy."

Today I must take a moment to wish a VERY HAPPY 89th BIRTHDAY to my GLAM-MA Phyllis.

She is one of the most amazing women I know. She has survived the great depression, WW2 and my dad's family; which is literally a feat in itself. She was a step-mother extraordinaire (of 11 children) an amazing wife and working woman. Biology is not what makes someone a parent or grandparent and the choice to marry her and bring her into our family was the BEST one my grandfather ever made. My sincere gratitude to grampa Chuck!
My grandma has always been there for me and a permanent fixture in my life of love. Never forgetting a birthday or special occasion and was a major influence on my personal STYLE. We have shared a mutual love of fashion for as long as I can remember and I was always excited to go to see her and look through her closet, jewels and her MAJOR shoe collection!
She served as part of the inspiration for my company; EVOLUTION VINTAGE (read the story HERE) and the silver, uber FAB mannequin that ALL Evolution Vintage pieces are photographed on is name after her; Phyllis.

On days like these I wish I was closer to home but know that I am sending my love to Ontario CANADA all the way from the Central Coast of Cali. CHEERS to 89 MORE YEARS!!

Sadly the term "winning" has been recently associated with Charlie Sheen's rantings but the term really has a more universal applicability and a REAL positive connotation, that has little to do with fame, money or EGO .. but inner strength to carry on.

How do you define "Winning" in your life?

Personally getting up each day with the ability to smile, move forward through the day and overcome it's obstacles for me is a WIN! I don't find life to be EASY to navigate or striking a balance something I am even close to obtaining but if you really break it down by the day it is not so overwhelming and a little bit easier to digest. A real WINNER is the person who keeps moving forward in a positive manner despite the onslaught of daily negativity, discouragement and failures!

What is my obsession of the moment? PLEATS! There is nothing that screams FALL to me than a Vintage wool pleated skirt with boots and a great blazer & fitted T-shirt, turtleneck or cowl neck sweater.

Pleats have been a staple design element in fashion for centuries. Did you know there are 11 different types of pleats, each with a different technique and look?

Accordion pleats are the most basic form of pleat, consisting of a series of permanent folds of equal width in alternating opposite directions. When pressed flat in one direction, accordion pleats become knife pleats. Accordion pleats are rarely used in dressmaking, but are used to make folding fans.

Box pleats are knife pleats back-to-back, and have a tendency to spring out from the waistline. They have the same 3:1 ratio as knife pleats, and may also be stacked to form stacked box pleats. These stacked box pleats create more fullness and have a 5:1 ratio. They also create a bulkier seam. Inverted box pleats have the "box" on the inside rather than the outside.

Cartridge pleats are used to gather a large amount of fabric into a small waistband or armscye without adding bulk to the seam. This type of pleating also allows the fabric of the skirt or sleeve to spring out from the seam. During the 15th and 16th centuries, this form of pleating was popular in the garments of men and women. Fabric is evenly gathered using two or more lengths of basting stitches, and the top of each pleat is whipstitched onto the waistband or armscye. Fortuny pleats are crisp pleats set in silk fabrics by designer Mariano Fortuny in the early 20th century, using a secret pleat-setting process which is still not understood.

Honeycomb pleats are narrow, rolled pleats used as a foundation for smocking. Knife pleats are used for basic gathering purposes, and form a smooth line rather than springing away from the seam they have been gathered to. The pleats have a 3:1 ratio–three inches of fabric will create one inch of finished pleat. .
Knife pleats can be recognized by the way that they overlap in the seam.
Organ pleats are parallel rows of softly rounded pleats resembling the pipes of a pipe organ. Carl Köhler suggests that these are made by inserting one or more gores into a panel of fabric.
Plissé pleats are narrow pleats set by gathering fabric with stitches, wetting the fabric, and "setting" the pleats by allowing the wet fabric to dry under weight or tension. Linen chemises or smocks pleated with this technique have been found in the 10th century Viking graves in Birka.

Rolled pleats create tubular pleats which run the length of the fabric from top to bottom. A piece of the fabric to be pleated is pinched and then rolled until it is flat against the rest of the fabric, forming a tube. A variation on the rolled pleat is the stacked pleat, which is rolled similarly and requires at least five inches of fabric per finished pleat. Both types of pleating create a bulky seam.
Watteau pleats are one or two box pleats found at the back neckline of 18th century gowns and some late 19th century tea gowns in imitation of these. The term is not contemporary, but is used by costume historians in reference to these styles as portrayed in the paintings of Antoine Watteau.

We all apply labels to everything we have in this life as part of the human condition to allow our minds to make positive or negative associations usually based on pre-conceived notions or beliefs and not always facts or feelings.

The labels we apply to objects rarely have repercussions or consequences. The same is not true with people. We are ALL guilty of judging and labelling others to suit our purpose, justify our behaviours or to confirm a belief system we have. What we don't stop to think is how that effects the other person or their lives. The news has been full of terrible tales of teen's committing suicide based on being bullied and judged for who they are.

Through history humans have been so vile to one another all simply based on ignorance (in both senses of the word).

Professional dancer, Dancing with the Stars PRO, world champion and champion for EQUALITY Louis Van Amstel brought my attention to the comments of Oklahoma state Rep. Sally Kern (R) who said "homosexuality poses a greater threat to America than terrorist attacks". After my initial shock at her verbal expression of her internal ignorance and character I really felt sad for her and all who share her belief - sadly there are many. Those who choose to hate, bully, or waste their time and energy judging others.

Equality, Acceptance and Tolerance of ANYONE who is different for their skin color, sexuality, life choices, size, or perceived disability is ESSENTIAL to our evolution as a human race. Although fiercely promoted as a gay/lesbian issue I really believe EQUALITY to be a HUMAN issue. Louis shares my belief of EQUALITY for ALL and I had a chance to ask Louis a few questions regarding his feeling on the issue recently;

LISA: Why are you so passionate about this cause?

LOUIS: I was bullied for being fat, gay and short which I learned to deal with growing up, but I'll never forget the feeling. It's humiliating and makes you feel so lonely. I don't wish anyone to have to go through those feelings, that's why I will do anything in my power to not only advocate against bullying, but also find ways what we can do about it together.

LISA: What bothered you the most about the recent comments from Sally Kerns?

LOUIS: At first a laughed, because I thought it was a joke. When I realized she was very serious about her statement "Homosexuals are more dangerous than terrorists" it got me so riled up I couldn't let it go. I felt humiliated and I relived the same feeling again as when I was bullied as a kid. So many people have worked hard to get where they're at in life, for some person, like Sally Kern, to dare to make that statement is devastating and uncalled for.

LISA: What inspired you to write to her? Did she reply to your letter?

LOUIS: Even though I'm not a father, suddenly I felt the need to stand up for all the kids that are being bullied today and have no voice. Writing Sally Kern was the right thing to do. Sally Kern has not replied to letter to her on twitter, but I'm sending it officially to her office. I'm doing my research right now to get it through the right channels!

LISA: What can people do to help get involved and stop the HATE and bullying?

LOUIS: Let your opinion be heard, but do it in a way you're not trying to change people's mind. Sharing your opinion is enough. If you fight fire with fire it only fuels the opposition. When we all start living life excepting each other's differences we wouldn't have the HATE issue, nor the bullying. Can you imagine a world where we would all be the same? Same skin color, same hair color, same religion, same personalities????? It's the diversity in all the above that makes the world go round.

LISA: Can you talk about how you use dance to build self esteem.

LOUIS: For years I used dance as therapy. Thank goodness for dance, because for a long time it was my way to express without ever having to say one word about my feelings. Feelings of loneliness, humiliation, embarrassment etc. On the outside I looked happy, but on the inside I was pretty much numb. It was the combination of my artistic expression through movement and winning dance competitions that gave me the power to deal with my self esteem. I turned into a rebel. My true self esteem started growing when I started learning to say 'NO' if it didn't feel right for me! I started realizing following my gut feeling, which was giving me such a good feeling about myself versus my insecure mind. I also saw how the outside world was respecting me for it. To be true to yourself is really hard work and it never ends, building self esteem through dance is just so much more fun!....and cheaper...(LAUGHS)

Louis is a tireless supporter of anti-bullying and NOH8 campaigns as well as supporting people with developmental/intellectual disabilities. He has a heart even larger than his many talents. This is an issue that we are all responsible to discuss, live our lives by example and teach our children and those around us tolerance. Hating back and acting out in negativity only perpetuates the problem. We should explore and talk about these issues in an intelligent and educated way. Life should be a celebration of DIFFERENCES and what makes each of us unique. It is only then can we all reach our full potentials as human beings and begin to evolve in peace; LOVE being the only label.

Monday Motivation: WORK IT!

When I take time for myself I like to read. I'm obsessed with biographies, memoirs, true stories, motivational books or books filled with NON-FICTION essentially. The current book that has my attention is the latest from Russell Simmons entitled SUPER RICH: A Guide To Having it All.There is a lot more to this book that I have responded to, thought about and got inspired by that I will blog about soon but I felt compelled to set my book down and share this quote that I literally read seconds ago:

"Whether it appears on the surface to be pedestrian or prestigious, tedious or tremendous, every moment must be infused with love and hard work. There is simply no other way to find long term success in this world" p. 73

So no matter what you do today, tomorrow or next week; changing diapers or changing lives do it with ALL YOU'VE GOT! Genuinely WORK HARD and Success (regardless how you measure it) will find you!

Thoughtful Thursday: Dance With Life

During a recent "music therapy" session I had with my husband I re-discovered my LOVE for the song "Dance with Life (The Brilliant Light)" by Bryan Ferry. I love the lyrics, vibe and overall message. Oh and Yes, I said music therapy. My definition: Cocktails and a full exploration or journey through my iTunes library and CD collection, memory lane walk and wine infused sing-a-long time which is completely FUN and CATHARTIC at the same time. Try it with your spouse or friends. Go song for song in a fabulous musical journey. There is no reason that the therapy session has to be booze infused either but I fear the sober version would be a little scary with my singing voice!

Back to the point. It made me think about life and our daily grind as a dance, where YOU need to LEAD, not let it lead you. Imagine waking each day and you have a choice of the music (soundtrack), the dance type/style, wardrobe, pace and partner. Your life and how you experience your daily dance is ultimately up to YOU. Let's see; today seems like a Viennese Waltz type day, I'm a little bit slower paced, close in hold with my chosen partner (my fabulous husband David), not sure of the soundtrack yet but perhaps the Bryan Ferry song?
Some people are overwhelmed by life and need to take a breath and maybe use this metaphor, on a day-by-day basis. Ask yourself when you rise to face the day ahead, based on your feelings, energy level and obligations "what will my dance be today?" Freestlye? Argentine Tango? Waltz? Belly Dance? Strip Tease? Solo? Partnered? there are so many different dance types and styles you are bound to find one that metaphorically suits your life. What a fun approach to your daily grind - where you take the LEAD! All of our lives and circumstances differ greatly but I feel the Dance with Life metaphor to be universal.

What will your dance be today? from the ballroom to the boardroom it is ultimately your choice! will you let someone else lead? or will YOU take the lead and leave your brilliant light behind?

A Tablescape Tribute: Gianni Versace

I have made it to ROUND 3 of the Lucky Magazine writing contest. They are searching for the next contributing writer and I want it to be me! Please take a few moments to REGISTER and VOTE for my entry! There is only 3 days left! Round 4 is the semi-finals and I can't get there without your help!

Anyone who knows me, knows my favourite fashion designer is the late Gianni Versace. When challenged by LUCKY to create a dinner party, with theme, menu and tabescape I jumped a the chance to theme out my party in a Versace-esqe way!

A Tablescape Tribute:

On a usual evening I entertain in a way I call “Fabulous Lite” not too much fuss or formality. Recently for a fab dinner for four I was inspired to create a TableScape Tribute to the late great Gianni Versace. He has been a creative inspiration for me since the tender age of 9 when I used to sneak into my sister’s room and remove all the Avedon shot Versace ads from her stacks of Vogue’s, I’ve seen EVERY runway show and dreamed of a day I would wear the now classic bondage dress with safety pins to an event. He was a fashion genius whose life was tragically cut short in 1997. It is my personal belief that there has been a gaping hole in Italian high-fashion since then. I converted this inspiration into a full evening of food and fun! First I created and sent a digital invitation to my guests (go paperless and save the trees) which includes a black and white photo of Gianni and his signature Medusa logo along with all the dinner deets.

How did I put it all together? Let’s start with the table.

My tablescape was all about combining elements I currently had in my home, re-purposing them and purchasing small accents that are fresh; it is the details that make a tablescape a success. First I covered my espresso colored dining table with a cream table cloth and a used a velvet Versace scarf with gold medusa logo’s as a “runner” down the center of the table.

Tablescape TIP: Use a scarf from your own collection/closet to add an edge to a blah table cloth that is in line with your theme or color scheme.

I placed 3 champagne glasses filled with water to act as the “anchor” of my table to serve as chic mini vases for the Spider Mums I purchased that morning fresh from the local grocer. I set the wine decanter beside the glasses to let the California Pino Noir breath before the feast.Â Each place setting had a copy of the menu laid between the salad bowl and the plate.Â I opted not to use the expected cloth napkins but used my monogramed paper napkins (“H"– for my husband’s last name) in black and white. I also re-invented the “napkin ring" by using real cocktail rings from my own jewelry collection. It gave a glamorous twist to the traditional plastic napkin ring and was a part of my fashion theme. A single cream Pillar candle perched on a tiny saucer was the center of the table flanked by the powdered Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese and dried chilies for the Entrée. At each end of the Versace logo Scarf/Runner was the last 2 Spider Mum tops that were left over from the bunch I purchased; waste not want not. I wanted to make sure that I incorporated all of the flowers into the table. The dishes were from a set of china service for 6 that I had purchased years ago in a Versace-Esque print with black and yellow tones. I hand painted the chargers from silver to a gold metallic to set the Entrée plates on. I had the chargers on hand (all in silver) from my wedding reception that I re-use during the holiday season. A little re-styling in gold acrylic paint and Voila! Instant gilded chargers that Gianni would have been proud of.

The Menu:

The menu was comprised of Appetizer, Salad, Bread, Entrée/Main Course as well as a stellar dessert and wine. The menu was essentially meat free as my husband and I are Pesco-vegetarians; we eat some fish, dairy products, and eggs along with plant foods; Our diet is plant-based. I offered a small portion of seafood as an appetizer. Jumbo Prawns served cold with a cocktail sauce I made myself.

The salad was created using organic California mixed greens (including Spinach), red onion, mushroom & green Apples and almond shavings with a Poppy Seed dressing.

I served Focaccia bread sticks halved with a side plate of Balsamic Vinegar, Olive Oil and fresh pressed Garlic.

I wanted the Entrée to be pasta since the theme features an Italian designer but presented in a non-traditional way. No Spaghetti and Meatballs here; I served a 3 mushroom and leek pasta in a white wine cream sauce topped with grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese.

Finally for dessert I created a caramel, creamed cheese and heath bar dip served with green apples.

How did I do it?? Dinner Recipes & Tips

Appetizer:

Purchased fresh jumbo prawns from the seafood counter at the local grocer. If that is not available purchase them frozen and thaw. I arranged them around the top of Martini Glasses and filled the center with a cocktail sauce that I created using:

•Ketchup (any type – I use Heinz; there is really is no other Keinz, truly!)
•Horse Radish
•Worcestershire sauce
•Fresh Squeezed lemon juice
•Garlic powder
There is really no “measuring” involved with this sauce. Eye-ball and taste as you go along. Use more ketchup than horseradish (unless you like it really hot), a splash or two of the Worcestershire sauce, squeeze in a lemon wedge or two and use the garlic powder to taste! Mix together and fill your martini glass. Chill in fridge until you are ready to serve.

Bread:

I baked an Artisan Focaccia purchased at Albertson’s. If the local grocery does not have a bake option buy one that is ready to eat. You can warm it in the oven at 350 for a few minutes. I prepared side plates using half Balsamic Vinegar and Light Olive Oil. In the center of this liquid Yin/Yang I freshly pressed 2-3 garlic cloves. Use the bread for mopping.

Salad:

•Organic California mixed greens including spinach
•Red Onion
•White Mushrooms
•Almond Slivers (small bag)
•Green Apples (2)
•Poppy Seed Dressing
Chop ingredients, mix with greens and toss with dressing! DONE! Adjust to the number of guests. TIP: Chop the green apples just before you serve to prevent the “browning effect”, you can also use lemon juice to slow the process down if you have to pre-make your salad. The greens get “soggy” fast so at the last minute apply the Poppy dressing.

Entrée / Main:

•Pasta: Spaghetti (I used white but you can choose the whole grain/brown alternative)
•Mushrooms (White, Shiitake, Mini-bella’s You can use a combination of ANY 3 types you like)
•Leeks (2)or more depending on the number of guests.
•White Wine (Dry)- Use a wine of your choice.
•Whipping Cream (1/2 pint Liquid – found with the half/half & milk section)
•Garlic (I combine powder and fresh cloves)
•Grated
The sauce does not take much time to make. Chop leeks, separate and soak. TIP: Let your leeks swim!! A leek is a layered veg that usually has dirt or grit between the layers. Chop into rings and separate them into a bowl of cold water (use your thumb to press and separate the individual rings). Let the separated rings soak and you will see the dirt sink to the bottom as the leeks float! Scoop them of the top and place in a pan with some Oilve oil. Add chopped garlic cloves in with the leaks and the olive oil and cook on high for a few minutes before adding the mushroom blend.

TIP: to speed up prep time buy pre-sliced mushrooms. Add the mushrooms to the leek and garlic mixture in the pan (you can always use garlic powder or combine the two).

Add a half a cup (or more) of your dry white wine. How much you use will depend on how many guests you have. Cook the mixture on high to burn off the alcohol. Once the mushrooms are cooks and appear to soften pour in whipping cream and stir. I usually use less than a half a pint. Cook for a few more minutes; pour over pasta, top with grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese (you can substitute with powder) and SERVE! DELISH!

Dessert:

•1 brick of Creamed Cheese (I use Philadelphia)
•1 Table Spoon Brown Sugar
•Vanilla Extract
•Caramel
•Heath Bar pieces (or SKOR depending on what is available, find bagged in baking isle)
•Green Apples
Let the Creamed Cheese get soft and mix the brown sugar and Vanilla extract in with it. Spread it out into a glass pie plate or glass cake pan (Again depending on how large your party is). Take the caramel (you can use the spreadable or the ice cream topping) and make a layer above the creamed cheese. Top with Heath bar toffee pieces and let cool in the fridge. TIP: Chop the green apples you will use to dip at the last minute to prevent the “browning” I referred to earlier. OR you can try the lemon juice trick to slow the browning process down until you are ready to treat your guests to this decadent dessert.

Attire – Host Look:

I wanted something sleek and minimal as the hostess and chef of this event; I know the polar opposite of the style esthetic of the man we were paying homage to, but this dinner was on the home carpet, not the red carpet. I wore a black wrap dress that is figure friendly and budget friendly (Old Navy). Black patent leather peep-toe pumps with wooden logo heel stems from FENDI (BlueFly), Vintage Cameo clasp bracelet (Evolution Vintage) and statement earrings (Forever 21). A Chic ponytail with a repurposed gold tone broken Vintage necklace with black onyx stones used as an instant DIY hair accessory; just add bobby pins. My makeup was minimal as well. I used M.A.C “Dazzlelight” Eye shadow as a base for a little bit of shine and “Grain” in the crease. Maybelline New York Lash Stiletto mascara in Black. Creamola liner on my lip with M.A.C Lusture Lipstick in “Pretty Please”(A41) as a base and my YSL Golden Gloss on top to shine. On fingers and toes I used Versace Nail Lacquer in sheer gold (V2017).

No matter what the occasion use what personally inspires you to inspire your next dinner party, tabelscape, menu and look. We had our fashion feast with the soft sounds of Elton John in the background (he was Gianni’s BFF after all). We talked business, life and fashion. Not only did my guests get to experience a Versace Tablescape Tribute but they got a lesson in fashion history too!!

For those of you who know me and/or read this blog know that lately I have been obsessed with jewels; costume, fine, contemporary, vintage, antique. I LOVE it all and I am an equal opportunity fashion offender. In my hunt for the most amazing an unique pieces I stumbled upon VESTIGE JEWELRY.

It is the passion of Tracy Glantz who designs AND makes each piece by hand using recycled metals, vintage crystals and unique mixing of the past and present. The contrast of her creations are STUNNING! and I immediately fell in love.

She is into all of the things I love and respect. She is a creative entrepreneur who is recycling and using elements of the past to style into the future. She has a unique perspective offering her clients custom, one-of-a-kind pieces with a "something for everyone" attitude. She is also inspired and ready to use her creations to make women feel beautiful AND pushes her creative boundaries with every piece! BRAVO! I spoke to Tracy about her Vestige Venture recently;

LISA: What inspired you to start your business and use Recycled/Vintage materials?

TRACY: I started my business, because of my love of jewelry. It makes sense to be responsible this day in time and use recycled, re purposed, and vintage materials. It makes a WOW statement, and adds dramatic elements that are unique and timeless to wear.

LISA: What inspires your pieces?

TRACY: My jewelry is inspired by many things I create, but to name a few; Old Hollywood Glamour, Art Deco, Baroque, Victorian, and Steampunk.

LISA: What is your favorite piece and why?

TRACY: My favorite piece is my first design creation which is a charm necklace. It’s derived from an older piece I have had for many years. It’s as simple as having one piece to inspire you. I just kept pushing my creative boundaries.

TRACY: I am currently living in Austin, Texas and a proud pet parent to my little adopted dog named Ozzy. I moved here from Dallas, Texas 2 years ago where I am originally from. I have worked as a network engineer in the telecommunications industry for 14 years. I started working from home two years ago, and it wasn’t until then I tapped into my creative ability. I had more time to pursue my passion for jewelry. I was grateful to have an opportunity to work from home, because not having those structured stresses freed my creative thought process and I was much more relaxed. I just keep striving to achieve more, and proud how my designs make people feel.

I am excited to make my first purchase from VJ; the issue is choosing which one that I NEED first!! reptile bracelet perhaps???
