Grey: The New Black For Me

Grey is the new black for Fall/Winter 2012 for me. During a recent closet re-organize I noticed just how much BLACK was in there. GREY in all of its shades is now my alternative. Black is such a staple some women have a hard time letting is go. You don't have to abolish black completely but let a little grey into your life.

My Grey Accessories Du Jour:

A few key accessories to substitute my usual blackness. I also have several shades in jackets, sweaters, skinny jeans and tops!

Giving Thanks

Today we celebrate Thanksgiving in America. Words alone could never convey the gratitude I have for my life and all of the people in it, both friends and family. As I begin to prepare my VEGAN meal for my family I am left thinking about this countries history and that of my native country Canada (who celebrates their Thanksgiving in October). I guess we all get so bogged down with "tradition" and social norms we never sit and realize how this celebration came to be or even stop to give gratitude to those who were forced to sacrificed their lives and land so we could sit up to our tables today with our loved ones. I think about the millions of slaughtered Turkeys and all of the Natives who lost their land and lives so "we" could call this country OURS. I had to share this statement by Russell Simmons as it really spoke to me today.

"I hope everyone has a wonderful time today with their family and friends, while reflecting on all the things they have to be thankful for.

In my house, however, we’ll be doing things a little bit differently than most Americans. Instead of eating Turkey flesh, we’ll be chowing down on some delicious Tofu Turkey. And instead of celebrating the story of the Pilgrims, we’ll be reflecting on how the kindness of the Wampanoag tribe who helped them got paid back with enslavement, violence and death.

I don’t say that to judge what anyone else is doing today, but rather to explain why sometimes I have a hard time “celebrating” a day that’s built around the enslavement and impoverishment of indigenous Americans and the annual slaughter of millions of innocent animals.

So today, try to take a moment from your celebration and at the very least be mindful of the suffering the Wampanoag and so many other Native Americans went through. And then take another moment to reflect on the suffering that turkey on your plate must have gone through too.

No matter what you end up eating and how you end up celebrating today, please have a safe, relaxing and loving time with you family and friends. But please also take that moment to reflect on the real stories behind this “Holiday.” You owe it to the Native Americans, the turkeys and yourself." - Russell Simmons

Enjoy each moment today regardless of your beliefs or traditions. Express your gratitude each and every day to those who you love and to strangers as well. Never forget to say "Thank You" every time someone does something for you, no matter how big or small. I am appalled to see how many people do not thank others or are devoid of simple manners. DO for others and be the example of compassion for all living things. Count your blessings and share them with others. The capacity to do so is what you REALLY should be giving thanks for.

Let today inspire the gratitude you should have all year long!

"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them." ~

Christmas Craft: Grab Your Balls

My mother is a heavy duty Christmas Crafter; full jeweled poinsettia apron and glue gun in hand by the end of October. She never fails to flood my inbox with tips, tricks, how-to videos and examples of Christmas Crafts in the hope she will inspire me. Well this time it worked. I have little time to be sitting around crafting with the kids, ma job, my home and something that resembles a social life. I did tackle this fabulous Ball Wreath project yesterday and was THRILLED with the results!

It is the coolest craft if you are pinched for time or money.

What you need:
*Wire Coat Hanger
*Assortment of Christmas Balls (preferable Plastic or "Unbreakable") - 50-80 depending on size
*Ribbon

Time: Under 30min

I ventured out to the local Dollerama and threw down about $6 for assorted silver balls (Packs of a dozen balls for $1/ea), then to RiteAid and spent another $4 for larger balls. $1 for thick wire trimmed ribbon. I had a white metal coat hanger on hand.

TOTAL COST: $11

*Re-Style Tip: You can use your OLD Balls from last year or years gone by to create a Christmas Memory Wreath if you are re-designing your look or colours for Holiday 2012. It would be AMAZING to use Vintage ornaments too for a Retro-Wreath! Truly One of a Kind. Total Cost : $0

Step 1: Shape the hanger into a "circle" first and then un-fasten the top.

Step 2: Thread the balls on. Mix and match textures and finishes and place them on the wire in no particular order. Symmetry is not the goal here.
Step 3: Re-Fasten the hanger at the top

Step 4: Add your bow

Step 5: HANG and Enjoy
I used a monochromatic palette of Silver tones and textures. You can you ANY color and textural combination to suit your personal taste and holiday decor. My friend Jensine opted for a mix of Silver and White.
Whatever combo you choose this Christmas Craft is bound to be a BIG hit! Make a few extra's as a gift to bring to your host/hostess this Thanksgiving  (USA) or to the host/hostess of your Christmas Cocktail Party!

P!NK Performance Art

Last night Alecia Moore aka P!NK blew the live and at home audience away on the stage of the American Music Awards. Her performance of her new song "try" was in a word: Brilliant! A real piece of performance art. I am so sick of proclaimed "pop" stars and their homogenized, generic, gimmick filled music and performances. All lip synced to perfection of course. Pink NEVER disappoints me with her live vocals and pushing her creative and physical boundaries.
Her interpretive dance and passionate vocal chops were stunning. I love seeing her evolution as she goes forward with her career. She simply gets better, stronger and broadens her horizons as a performer. She is such an inspiration as we are the same age, but she is SUPER FIT!
Thanks P!NK for this few minutes for a real theatrical performance and for the motivation to get my ass into shape!

Also I feel the need to mention after reading the on-line "fashion news" this morning that I actually liked her red carpet look and I don't care if Kim Kardashian wore it in another color. She is so irrelevant in comparison to a real artist contributing something to our society. No comparisons required. Pink rocked this look. Period.

See her ROCK the AMA's
