Mature Models: A Breath Of Fresh Air

This was a wonderful week in fashion advertising for me. I cannot even express my thrill land delight at seeing the recent ad campaign by the French fashion house CELINE.

Led by British Fashion designer and Creative Director Phoebe Philo the house features American writer Joan Didion as the new face of the house. At 80 years young Joan in over sized black shades is a vision of character and quite frankly a breath of fresh air.

A documentary about her life was just crowd funded through kisktarter, it required $80,000 and received $221,135.00. We can expect to see her documentary in September 2015!

Joan is not new to the fashion world either. In the 1960's she did a two year stint at VOGUE starting as promotional copywriter and worked her way to associate feature editor. While at VOGUE she wrote her first novel Run, River that was published in 1963.

She has a large list of literary accomplishments that spans non-fiction, fiction, screenplays and plays.

Seeing Joan reminded me that there ARE forward thinking, creative and unique people left in the world. Forward thinkers who are tired of the over played, over exposed visions of what I call "the herd". In the wake of the 'Kimye" VOGUE cover and subsequent Balmain ad campaign I was beginning to really wonder ... and worry!

Seeing Joan for Celine was the first of 3 mature and stylish ladies featured in fashion ad campaigns this week!!

and the forever stylish Iris Afpel for Alexis Bittar
The house of LANVIN paved the way in 2012 when their models included then 62 year old Advanced Style Icon Tziporah Salamon

AND

Jacquie "Tajah" Murdock, 82

I hope this officially means the tide is turning and fashion houses are now looking past age, shape and size and looking for true character, wisdom and personality.

Think Pink: FALL

Image: Hayley Marie Photography Wardrobe: Evolution Vintage Styling: LisaG Model: Kylie

We have been preconditioned in fashion culture when we think pink with respect to seasons we think of Spring and/or Summer. Pink is not a hue that comes to mind as summer wraps up and we roll into the Fall season. As always, Fashion has only the rules you personally apply. Wearing white after labour day and the like are things of the past. I was happy to see the fall runways full of pinky pastels.
"Pink makes the prettiest addition to winter wardrobes; partner it with soft grey and black for an instant burst of femininity" ~ VogueUK fashion features director Sarah Harris. Making reference to day wear.

I am not a slave to trends and wear whatever color I want, when I want too. I am delighted in PINK for fall, especially for evening:

KORS: 30 & Fabulous

Happy Anniversary Michael Kors ~ 2011 marks the 30th year in the fashion business for this famous designer who has re-defined American Sportswear. His designs are timeless, classic and chic! He sold his first collection to Bergdorf Goodman at the age of 19 and has never looked back.

He designed for the French house Celine from 1997-2004 as well as continuing to design for his own label. He was the first ever women's ready-to-wear designer and creative director for Celine. I sincerely respect designers who can design under more than one 'umbrella' bringing their own design aesthetic but staying true to the labels history and catering to their customer. This creative multi-tasking is a very rare quality few designers can pull off well.

MK with Stylist Rachel Zoe: Harpers Bazaar.

His philosophy: "Make people feel confident and comfortable; help women look beautiful."

He is the recipient of the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) life time achievement award and at the age of 50 made him the youngest designer EVER to receive that honor.

MK has a large clientele of celebrities but he designs for real women. His clothes are fabulous and functional. My MK purchase for Fall/Winter; a black MK belted trench coat, which I LOVE:

I loved his "Twisted Country Club Dressing" of the 1990's with all the 'supermodels' of the decade on hand at all of his shows.

MK signed on to Project Runway in 2004. Project Runway is "must see TV" at my house and I truly love MK for sharing his wisdom and honesty. Some of his no nonsense critiques are hilarious! and I always look forward to hearing his perspective on the designers.

His signature style: Black Blazer, Black T-shirt, and black trouser or jeans topped with black aviator's (MK of course). Chic & Sleek!

“I think fashion is traditionally about society, worshipping youth,” he says. “But I think the best combination is youth and experience. So right now is a wonderful moment for me. I still feel curious. I still feel excited about what’s next.”

I'm excited to see what is next for you too Michael, CHEERS to 30 more years!!! The sky's the limit.
