RIP Anna Piaggi: Queen of Eclecticism

© David Downton, 2000

This morning in Milan, fashion icon, writer and front row fixture passed away at the age of 81.  The fashion world gained another angel and the physical world has lost it's Queen of Eclecticism.

Not very often are we as a society blessed with an individual that TRULY defies trends and dresses in a truly authentic way. A genuine reflection of their inner self which defies all "rules" and traditional taste.

Anna Piaggi has been a fashion fixture since the 1970's. She started working for an Italian publishing company (Mondadori) and then onto Vogue Italia. She was known there for her D.P's - doppie pagine, Her Double Page Spreads in Italian VOGUE where she was given creative free reign and released her inner stylist and creative fierceness. She has been a stylist, muse, editor, writer, collector, style icon and front row regular.

She was a friend and muse to Karl Lagerfeld since the 1970's and Manolo Blahnik. He has been quoted as saying she is "modern beyond belief." and created many of the shoes she wore.
She was also the muse of British milliner Stephen Jones and she had a life long love for unique hats and head pieces.

She was a fashion and accessories collector and constantly mixed Vintage and contemporary, textures and prints.  She loved a fabulous hat and will be remembered for her iconic blue hair that she had up until her death today. She was honored with an exhibition in called "Fashion-ology" at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (2006)

It featured: 265 pairs of shoes, 29 fans, 932 hats, 2,865 dresses, 24 aprons and 31 feather boas.

FUN FACT: She used a RED 1969 Olivetti typewriter daily.

Her style was the definition of eclectic. She mixed prints and  piled on the accessories: Hats, Gloves, Decorative Cains, Purses, Fans, Jewels and Scarves. She mixed old with new, the avant guard with the conservative, and pushed the fashion envelope right off the table. Although some could call her aesthetic silly or costume, I think it is unique, bold and fabulous!

Anna's life was a vivid textured illustration and lesson to all of us that style knows no bounds except the ones we impose on ourselves.

Sole Sister Sunday: Marilyn's Shoes

Marilyn Monroe is one of the most recognizable popular culture ICONS of Film, Sexuality and Style. Although outwardly beautiful based on what I have read it it sad to think of the internal struggles she faced with fame, loneliness and self esteem issues. What a real trip it would have been to walk a mile in her shoes a size 7AA (US) 38-39 (Euro)

The luxury design house of Salvatore Ferragmo is honoring Marilyn with an exhibit in their museum in Florence, Italy from June 20-Jan 28, 2013.

On display are film clips, photos, international magazine covers, Monroe's original writings and 30 pairs of shoes and more than 50 outfits she wore on the set of her most popular movies, such as "Niagara", "Some Like It Hot" and "The Asphalt Jungle" as well as in her personal life.

She rocked a pair of Ferragamo steel reinforced stilettos in the film "Some Like It Hot" (1959). an estimated 30-40 pairs of shoes were created for Marilyn in the 1950's. She ordered her shoes via the Park Avenue store of Ferragamo's Shoe Salon in New York and was a loyal customer until the end of her life.

The company has re-issued  replicas created from the last half of the 1950's  in a range of colours and a big price tag of about $1,750 a far cry for the $44.95 she paid in the 1960's

It was an amazing experience to visit Palm Springs tribute to Marilyn and her iconic scene in "The Seven Year Itch" . The dress was created by costume designer William Travilla. I can't seem to locate who created the shoes. Anyone know?

Me & Marilyn - Palm Springs, CA

She left behind a legacy and an impression on people that has lasted over 50 years and shows no signs of slowing down.

To me she will ALWAYS represent what a Glamorous Hollywood STAR should be.

Chick-Fil-A: The Bigots Burger

BIGOT:  "a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially: one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance"

Recently the trashy fat food chain Chick-Fil-A has publicly proclaimed their bigotry to the world as their president and CEO Dan T. Cathy felt the need to profess his opposition to same sex marriage and his proclamation that "gay marriage violated God's plan." I would like to point out Mr. Cathy although you are entitled to your opinion of intolerance and hatred, if you really knew what God's plan was you would not be murdering and selling one of "god's" creatures (chicken) and peddling fat fried food to assist in the national epidemic of obesity and all junk food related illnesses. I can confidently say that I KNOW God's plan is NOT to segregate, hurt or judge others. Did you skip the passages of your "good book" that states - “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-5 or "Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God?" Romans: 2: 1-3

Kate Moss W Magazine

Let me be clear that I am NOT a religious person. I do not subscribe to the herd mentality. I am so sick of religious hypocrites that pick and choose from their bibles for items that apply to them on a situational basis and use it to hurt other people. This is not restricted to the Christians either; Catholics and Jehovah's Witnesses please stand up!

Kate Moss W Magazine

No matter what my personal opinion there is no denying human recorded history of the atrocities that have been committed with a religious justification. People's prejudicial opinions being one on a smaller scale. It is not my intention to make disparaging remarks about everyone who claims to be religious. I actually know a select few believers who are amazing people and for those of you that I don't know I don't hold Mr. Cathy's ignorant comments against you. I don't judge your beliefs, on the contrary I actually respect them. What I don't respect is the use of those beliefs to hurt, judge or exclude others.

I bet if someone looked a little closer at Mr. Cathy's "traditional" Christian behavior, history and marriage we would find a whole new level of hypocrisy.

How can someone CLAIM to be a good Christian when they exclude, hurt or judge their fellow human being because their life does not fit into the confining walls of their proverbial church collection plate? Do you really BELIEVE something because someone told you it was TRUTH? or you read it somewhere?

This kind of bigotry goes way past same sex marriage. Essentially Mr. Cathy is excluding ALL who do not fall into this generic, faux-religious boundaries. I think it is a fair assessment that it is "God's" plan that we all love, support and respect one another through this physical life. Why would he/she deny love to someone just because they happen to be of the same sex? based on a book written by another imperfect human?  In the wise words of my outspoken husband who happens to believe in God "God did not write religion or the bible, humans did". We are ALL imperfect, too bad we were not all HONEST. I don't claim to have any of the answers but I do KNOW that LOVE is never wrong no matter what it's form.

The moral of my story: The best thing we can do to combat the bigotry is BE OURSELVES, LOUD and PROUD!

I usually ignore the haters (as there are a lot out there) and I let the HATE MOTIVATE, but sometimes it feels good to stand up to the bigots and bully's

I like Lady Ga Ga's lyric on the subject "I'm beautiful in my way 'Cause God makes no mistakes, I'm on the right track baby I was born this way"

It doesn't matter if you love him, or capital H-I-M
Just put your paws up
'cause you were born this way, baby

My mama told me when I was young
We are all born superstars
She rolled my hair and put my lipstick on
In the glass of her boudoir

"There's nothing wrong with loving who you are"
She said, "'Cause he made you perfect, babe"
"So hold your head up girl and you'll go far,
Listen to me when I say"

I'm beautiful in my way
'Cause God makes no mistakes
I'm on the right track, baby
I was born this way
Don't hide yourself in regret
Just love yourself and you're set
I'm on the right track, baby
I was born this way

Oh there ain't no other way
Baby I was born this way
Baby I was born this way
Oh there ain't no other way
Baby I was born this way
I'm on the right track, baby
I was born this way

Don't be a drag ‒ just be a queen [x3]
Don't be!

Give yourself prudence
And love your friends
Subway kid, rejoice your truth
In the religion of the insecure
I must be myself, respect my youth

A different lover is not a sin
Believe capital H-I-M (Hey hey hey)
I love my life I love this record and
Mi amore vole fe yah (Love needs faith)

Don't be a drag, just be a queen
Whether you're broke or evergreen
You're black, white, beige, chola descent
You're Lebanese, you're orient
Whether life's disabilities
Left you outcast, bullied, or teased
Rejoice and love yourself today
'cause baby you were born this way

No matter gay, straight, or bi,
Lesbian, transgendered life,
I'm on the right track baby,
I was born to survive.
No matter black, white or beige
Chola or orient made,
I'm on the right track baby,
I was born to be brave.

I was born this way hey!
I was born this way hey!
I'm on the right track baby
I was born this way hey!
I was born this way hey!
I was born this way hey!
I'm on the right track baby
I was born this way hey!

Same DNA, but born this way.
Same DNA, but born this way.

The Gift Of GUTS: Kristen Johnston

Image: David Khinda

She has made us ALL LAUGH with her acting chops, her insanely hilarious physical comedy line delivery and now has used her own words and GUTS to give an honest glimpse into her private life of success and substance abuse. Turns out Kristen Johnston is not only an Emmy award winning actress and a statuesque stunner but she is also a wonderful author and an addict in recovery.  Her New York Times best selling book "GUTS, the endless follies and tiny triumphs of a giant disaster" candidly and comically chronicles her road to fame, addiction and recovery. What I appreciated about the book was not only it's clever title GUTS which has a double meaning in both a figurative and literal sense but Kristen shines a light on the fact that we are ALL in this together and addicted to something. Also every word was penned by Kristen herself. It is a memoir about HER life in HER own words which in a literary sea saturated with celeb bio's and books is extremely unique and RARE.  No ghost writer here and I have it on good authority that she is one of the only celebs to pen her own memoir for which she immediately has my respect. She and I share the belief that only brutal honestly, accountability and sheer GUTS is the only way to heal and evolve. Let's be honest WE are ALL on the path to recovery on some level.

I had the sincere pleasure of having a candid conversation with Kristen recently. She had me laughing, crying and then laughing some more. I can relate to her in several ways and strangely felt like I was talking to an old friend.

LG: What has been the most challenging/difficult part of the writing process?

KJO: "Interestingly enough it was the introduction. Which I literally wrote and re-wrote hundreds of times up until the last minute. I knew that it had to set the stage tonally for the book. First and foremost I know there are a lot of celebrity addiction memoirs so I was like, god I can't be another one of those. I also know that because I have been out of the public eye for so long, who knows what they thought of me at the time. They have not seen me for a long time, they probably think all celebrities are fed grapes and have a manni/peddi every morning. The bottom line is I'm just a hard working actress. I don't have a posse and I don't have handlers. My goal with the introduction was to introduce me as who I am, without saying HI I'm Kristen (Laughs). I wanted to get everybody on the same playing field regarding addition. I really wanted people to understand  that I'm not just talking to them as some actress in Hollywood. Some spoiled bitch who is so bored she has to take drugs. I'm talking to them as their sister, their cousin, their mailman, as their boss, everybody who has addiction. We are all the same."

LG: Are you surprised with the amount of feedback you have received?

KJO: "90% of the response has been really great. The coolest part about GUTS for me is the feedback that is on the GUTS website, go to the Q&A section and see what I'm talking about. A lot of the feedback is from people who have a loved one who is an addict and that they have never understood addiction until they read my book. I'm surprised with the level of interaction and how much I care and I really do. I have to remember as an addict that I don't have all the answers.  It is ok that when someone reaches out to me in desperate straights it is ok to say I don't know how to help you"

 Image: David Khinda

LG: How has writing the book helped YOU?

KJO: "It has changed everything for me. It has certainly changed my whole view on life, on people, on sobriety. My understanding of sobriety was that you are either with AA or against AA. Now I have this great understanding about it does not have to be like counting the days of sobriety and the pressure it puts on you that if you have a relapse you have to start over. Can you imagine having four years of sobriety and then you  fuck up and go out and drink, or you cut, or you eat .. whatever your thing is, and have to start over - DAY 1. It is deflating and it is debilitating and I think it keeps people sick. I have also been very vocal about the second A - anonymous. Alcoholics Anonymous was developed in the 30's when it was socially unacceptable to be honest. My point is; look if you want to keep it quiet, keep it quiet dude, non of my business but as I say at the end of the book - talk about it. Tell your boss you are struggling, it needs to become like "I have cancer" and it still isn't."

We talked a lot about honesty and gave her my two cents on how society does not encourage people to live by the truth but instead to shroud themselves with lies. She wholeheartedly agreed and went on to say "Everybody is a liar. We are taught that it is better to lie. People don't want to hear about it (truth/addiction), they would rather we keep quiet and stay in church basements and have our little cold Styrofoam coffee cup and walk down the block without eye contact .. FUCK THAT, I'm not going to do that anymore.  Why should I be ashamed of seeking help?"

Image: David Khinda

She read me a story and letter to me from a 22 year old addict who's counsellor gave him GUTS to read in rehab after all other methods of treatments are unsuccessful. It changed his life and perspective and gave him hope that he could get well and that he was worth something.  He said "Thank you Miss Johnston, you don't know me but you may have just saved my life". It literally left me in tears and was so moving.

LG: What do you tell someone who asks how to approach or help their loved one who is an addict?

KJO: I wrote an article for TheFixx.com called "I ain't No Miss Sobriety" which will totally answer your question.

She is working a project called SLAM (Sobriety, Learning and Motivation) to bring a "Sober School" to NYC and is 5 years into the process. There are currently over 30 sober high schools in the US (4 of which are in Boston) but nothing like it in New York. A lot of road blocks and hurdles ahead but Kristen and her team are on the road to getting this school opened. The statistics were unbelievable.  Kristen shared "ONE in every THREE teenagers meet the medical criteria for addiction". According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration 1 out of every 70 teens are admitted to rehab but when put back into a regular school post-treatment 80% will relapse in the first 90 days.  Kristen feels like this stat is realistically more like 90% or higher. She wants to provide a place that New York teens can get educated in an environment that promotes a lifestyle of recovery and success. You can help!  Go to SLAM's website to make a donation.

Kristen as Holly in the Exes

The world fell in love with Kristen years ago for her role as Sally on "3rd Rock From The Sun", on various world theatrical stages, for her numerous television and film roles (remember her Sex & The City Character Lexi?) and more recently for her Hilarious character Holly on the hilarious TV Land show "The Exes". I have personally fell in love with who she REALLY is thanks to her GUTS. She is flawed and fabulous, brash and beautiful, honest and hilarious. I'm excited to see/watch/read what she has in store for the world next. I don't know about you but I would like a front row seat.  Thank you Kristen for giving the world the gift of GUTS. Take a bow baby! BRAVO!

Sole Sister Sunday: Shinnovation by Kobi Levi

I am loving this weekly shoe feature which feeds my personal obsession with all things footwear.  The best part for me is the collection of knowledge and having the ability to pass it on.  In my travels I came across a real Shinnovator (Nope not a real word but means: Shoe Innovator) in designer Kobi Levi of Tel Aviv Isreal.

The designs are creative and quirky statement pieces that are "Shoe Surrealism".  From coffee pots to cartoons, art can imitate life on your feet for a price, a hefty price. He translates his inspiration literally in his shoes.
