SATC Fashion: Samantha Jones

June 6th marked the 15th anniversary of the first episode of Sex and the City airing on HBO. The most enrapturing part of the show for me was of course the FASHION! Fashion was the 5th character of the show and films to me.

I want to start this 4 part series with the boldest of them all. Character Samantha Jones portrayed by actress Kim Cattrall.
Samantha's character is a female powerhouse PR executive who is highly sexualized and completely scandalous. I truly love her character and her boldness, thank to Stylist Pat Field is directly reflected in her clothes. Her character was witty, hilarious and FABULOUS!
Kim and Pat Field

We saw this character's style evolve through the series and movies but her 'style' was always sexy, bold, and bright. I love the bright colors, mixes of prints and amazing accessories. She was the ultimate professional by day and party girl by night! The glimpses of just enough skin to be age appropriate is an inspiration to us all that no matter what your age you can still be chic and sexy.
The character also loves her statement accessories as well as having an affinity for designer labels, especially CHANEL a girl after my own heart!

Kiss Curl: Contemporary Chic

1925
I'm currently in the middle of my New Year closet purge and organization. I am ready for new looks, a fresh way to re-style what is left and make new additions. The overhaul also goes for my hair. I'm contemplating a new look but making the best at creating diversity with the one I have now.
On New Years eve, along with my amazing Vintage velvet/feathered hat I went with a soft curled look with hot rollers off to one side and on the opposite side a "kiss curl". Like always I did a contemporary/vintage fusion look in both hair and dress. I mixed contemporary pieces like a black pencil skirt, Alternative Apparel Cobalt Burn out t-shirt, black blazer, Patricia Field fingerless gloves with the retro hat and vintage blue rhinestone necklace.
By definition a kiss curl is "A spiral curl plastered to the forehead or cheek"
The Kiss Curl for me combines Vintage glamour, retro-romance with a dash of contemporary chic-ness. There have been many variations of this look over time ...
1930's
Marlene Dietrich 1935
Louise Brooks
1960's
Kate Moss for John Galliano c. 1995

Will you rock a CHIC CURL in 2013?

Paging Nurse FABULOUS

I know it is summer BUT any fashionista worth her designer shoes knows it's time to shop for FALL! Nothing says fall to me like an AMAZING cape. Capes are a perfect Fall/Winter solution for ANY climate. I live on the Central Coast of California and I can still, from time to time ROCK a wool cape.  I immediately fell in LOVE with this Vintage Nurse's Cape in Navy with a Red liner from VintageClothingDream -

As soon as  I saw it I was immediately taken back to the 4th season of Sex and The City where Stylist Pat Field hit another ensemble home run with Carrie in a Vintage Nurse Cape very similar to the one for sale below. Style with a sequin bag and fingerless gloves ~ Still CAPE CHIC!

My FALL Version of Carrie's Chic Look

Designer Profile: EMMA DOMB

I love Fashion History and today's look into the past is via American dress designer Emma Domb.  Emma Domb was a California dressmaking company with headquarters in San Fransisco. The company was actively producing dresses and gowns from 1939 through the 1970s. Domb Manufacturing Company was owned by Emma Domb and Lorraine Domb Steinberg. They specialized in wedding, party, prom and cocktail dresses. They were also known for fancy-date ensembles.

The Domb dresses are now highly collectible among Vintage collectors and contemporary fashionistas. The prices range from $60 into the hundreds for a piece of the past.

Stylist Patricia Field brought Domb back to the big screen on the back of iconic fashionista character Carrie Bradshaw in the Sex and the City Movie (1)  - Chartlotte's baby shower scene. I bet that this blue stunner was once a gown made mini for the film.

I, myself had the pleasure of acquiring a Domb gown for Evolution Vintage. I had to dresscue the piece as there was some serious damage to the hem and bottom of the dress due to age and dry cleaning attempts (can't be seen in the image). I DRESS-esurrected it as a contemporary mini cocktail dress. the bodice has the most amazing fabric with Aurora Borealis sequins. The colour of burnt orange is BOLD and amazing for any event.
