You're Fat and It's Your Fault: Guest Blog

Myself and My Husband - Evolution Rewind Ring Shoot

My two favorite concepts/words are ACCOUNTABILITY and TRUTH. I truly believe that is where all of your personal power is housed. Today I welcome my husband David with his first guest blog discussing his experience with these very issues, taking accountability and responsibility for your life in the general sense. Specifically he wants to introduce you to his friend pain and truth as they  pertain to life changes. We have just started a new year and I would wager that the majority of the goals/resolutions have to do with fitness and weight loss so this post will be a great motivator.

Come on let’s face it if you’re fat it’s your fault. Ouch that hurts!  Hey, that’s not politically correct.  How dare I say such a thing?  Please give me something I can digest, you say.  Like how about a magical fat loss pill? Oh yeah that didn’t work and made me ill.  Wait a second what about that new juice cleanse diet that so and so just lost all that weight using? That’s right it all came back and with a vengeance not to mention too much planning, too much preparation, the mess and regardless what they said I was hungry most of the time when they promised I wouldn’t be.  Oh I know!  What about that packaged diet plan where I buy all their food? That’s right I just couldn’t justify the cost or really afford it as it was another temporary fix with yet another big letdown.  Hold on; hold a minute while you munch on that tasty comfort food snack that says I will deal with this tomorrow.  Well honey let me remind you today is the tomorrow of yesterday and that ditch isn’t going to dig itself.
Companies have made millions in convincing you that there is a painless way to lose weight without all the discomforts that come with a lifestyle change.  What was that? a lifestyle change?  Oh I’m not looking for that, I am just looking to drop some weight then resume my life again.  Well then refer to the top paragraph and continue to ignore the eight hundred pound gorilla in the room or better referred to as the truth.

Before I go on let’s be realistic as this applies to adults who are in charge of what they eat and not the many abused children who are at the mercy of what their parents feed them. Yes it is a form of abuse to feed your children unhealthy food. Have you seen the statistics on Childhood obesity?  Let me preface the rest of this piece by making clear that my intention is not to hurt or belittle anyone but to merely bring forth the truth and illustrate what we all already know.

Okay so the “truth”.  The truth is a lifestyle change! As the specifics mentioned above in the first paragraph are not sustainable.  Even if there are few who are successful in those endeavors the fact is they are the exception to the rule.  So what constitutes a lifestyle change? Yeah you already know the equation for good health – a balanced diet low in fat, sugar and processed foods – high in fruits, vegetables, nuts and lean meats, etc.  – regular exercise, rest and low stress.  Wow no wonder few achieve their goals in this instant gratification society.  It sounds simple enough but can be extremely challenging if not approached right.

Alright enough already what is the secret sauce?  Embracing and accepting pain and discomfort.  Okay for all of you still reading and ready to commit to change start small with realistic goals.  As you build momentum you can push a little harder.

Rather than continue preaching I will share my personal experience.  I struggled to bring forth change in my daily habits I continued to fail only to resort back to my unhealthy lifestyle but most often to a higher degree.  I started to lose confidence in myself and would often give up with the “I’ll start tomorrow syndrome”.  Remember today is yesterday’s tomorrow and tomorrow truly never comes in terms of definition.
After so many failed attempts I was experiencing a far greater pain than that of a lifestyle change, my pain was internal and was haunting my self-esteem and well being.  Little did I realize I was becoming accustomed to pain and discomfort but of the unhealthy kind.  Realizing this was a turning point and became one of my greatest motivating factors.  I understood that in order to be successful I not only had to expect and accept the pain and discomfort but I had to embrace it, look forward to it and eventually crave it.  We have all heard the sayings, “No pain no gain – Pain is weakness leaving the body”.  Well this knowledge has been around for years however multimillion dollar companies with large marketing budgets have been very successful in making us believe we can achieve our goals without pain and discomfort.
Yes losing weight or any lifestyle change is painful and brings forth much discomfort in the beginning.  I use the word pain as that was my experience.  Discomfort yeah but in the beginning discomfort really didn’t capture it as well as the simple term pain.  I am neither a doctor nor an expert however I am just like many of you reading this, the end user.
So back to my story, I committed to change via the acceptance that pain was key in successfully changing my lifestyle.  I planned my meals, my workouts, etc. as that was the easy part.  What I changed in my approach was in the result I was looking for – pain & discomfort.  The result was instantaneous! Wow I didn’t even have to wait the thirty days it normally takes to see a difference.  I humored myself all along the way.  I would wake up and pain had become my unrelenting friend.  She was always there putting me in check.  My mindset had shifted as I knew when she appeared I was making strides and she was a reflection I was moving in the right direction.  The pain I had been feeling from being unsuccessful and losing confidence was slowly migrating to my friend who I would start out with each day.  I really didn’t realize this until the monumental shift had already taken place.  This was in as little as a couple of weeks.  That’s right weeks, not days remember we are acknowledging the truth.  Again my expected result was not weight loss as in a couple of weeks my weight loss was minimal.  We all know weight loss is a marathon not a sprint.  If you lose weight in the metaphor of a sprint and keep it off you are definitely the exception to the rule.

How did I make pain my friend?  I awoke and went to sleep each night expecting her ever presence first.  She didn’t just arrive she was there.  So I talked to her and would take her down a notch or two with counting my blessing no matter how small.  Breathing is a constant and has been used for centuries in mediating and being more in the moment.  I would be thankful for breathing as it is a necessity to live so I would give thanks.  I would give thanks for my loved ones, where I lived, that I was in a society that is so overfed that we have this overweight dilemma.  How thankful I was not to be in a position of pain from lack of not having any food and many people in the world who face this daily.  Stop and take a moment to ponder that.  Feeling embarrassed?  Me too.
One day when conversing with my new friend (pain) I thanked her for pulling me into the moment that I strive for in meditation each day.  Here all this time pain brought me into the moment much easier than all the breathing techniques had.  Pain was slowly becoming a catalyst for improvement in so many other areas in my life as well.  Those in my life were recognizing I was changing and would make positive remarks.  I was gaining confidence each day and now had a way to measure change, yeah you got it by my new good friend – pain.  I even named her as we were becoming quite close.  As time went on I had good days and bad days but she was always there.  When I would back slide she was gone and her brother (the internal pain of failure) would return.  He was not my friend and I never liked him.  She despised him as well.  I yearned for her when I would backslide as I came to realize she always had my best interest at hand.

Unfortunately she subsided into obscurity in time (depending on how you apply yourself will determine how long until she subsides).   Months had passed and low and behold I was confident, fit and was enjoying internal peace most of the time.
As I faced challenges in other areas in my life I knew I had the secret sauce and lost the fear I once carried with change.  As an example I had the confidence to leave a twenty year career that paid good and had me in what is referred to as the “Golden Handcuffs”.  I left that job as it was not fulfilling nor matched my core values and started my own company.  I used the same practice with fear as I did with pain and embraced the change in my career.  My goal was never money but to create an environment that aligned with my core values.  The result of this approach is that I now enjoy working for myself in a successful and fast growing company.  The money was never my goal as the weight loss was never my goal however it became the byproduct.

Again, my intention in writing this piece is to share my experience in hopes that it helps anyone struggling with pain  of weight loss or any change.

David Hergenroeder

Thanks David for that digital kick in the ass. Truly your current relationship with gravity, fitness level or any other circumstance IS within YOUR control and power. Even if there is something out of your control in life you can control your response, thus it is all up to YOU. So, wow - I am fat and it's my fault? What a powerful and motivating concept! Cheers to accountability and embracing the uncomfortable to achieve the desirable.

See How Powerful You Are?

I saw this on the Instagram of Melanie Notkin, AKA the Savvy Autnie. I simply adore this message for the power in it's simplicity. It is a simple concept but difficult in it's application for some people. One must be accountable for the current status in their lives, choices and associated consequences. In order to make change you have to be accountable and in essence take your POWER back, oddly from yourself.  You create all of the negative self-talk and thoughts, not external circumstances. You cannot control what goes on the outside but you are in control of how you react to it, internalize it and process it.

This quote makes me feel powerful. I KNOW I have the ability to change or improve my current situation or circumstance, and SO DO YOU!

What are you waiting for?

The Shame Game: Shame on them? or Shame on us?

Is it just me or are there others who are annoyed to see the winner of 'The Biggest Looser' being shamed for her weight loss?
Our society projects an utterly unattainable ideal of beauty. It is unattainable not only because it is unrealistic, it actually ceases to exist. No one can agree on what is 'perfect' or 'ideal' at all as beauty or any imagery  is a totally subjective experience.

The winner of the reality series, Rachel Frederickson lost 155 pounds on the show. She started at 260 and the final weight was 105 (she is 5'4" & 24 years old.)
The Internet has exploded with criticism over her loss and I am sickened to read the comments from people. I do not watch the show but have had a hard time escaping the news stories and commentary from all the critical people hiding behind their computers and smart phones.

My first thought was, 'society should be ashamed of themselves. First they FAT shame her for being overweight and then they THIN shame her for being to thin'.  My second thought was, 'is this really a news worthy story? who cares how much weight some stranger just got paid $250,000 to loose'.

After the incessant images, stories and posts in my facebook timeline and twitter feed I felt compelled to 'weigh' in on the issue.

I would first like to say BRAVO to Rachel. She worked her ass off, literally to lose the weight, regardless of peoples warped opinions. It was her choice and I'm glad she is standing behind it.
The "experts" are complaining that her BMI now is too low, but before it was too high. They are the Goldilocks of body image but what they forget to mention is no one will be ideal or juuuust right. If people were accepted for who they are shows like "The Biggest Loser" would be completely irrelevant.

BMI it is like the weight equivalent of IQ in my opinion. A completely arbitrary measure with way too many variables to be accurate and applied to everyone.

This issue of body image and shame must be discussed so I guess we should all be grateful to Rachel and the media shame game for being the catalyst. Women need to open their eyes and realize that there is no REAL ideal of beauty, only the ones that we impose on ourselves. We are served the proverbial entree of some random fashion editor's ideal but it is only a 'suggestion' or something to 'inspire us'. Instead of taking accountability, women BLAME the media and fashion magazines for depicting an image that they CHOOSE to accept.
Labels & Stereotypes

Day after day I see intelligent, beautiful women feel poorly about themselves based on what a stranger prints online, in a magazine or puts on television. They hold themselves up to a standard that completely ceases to exist and is generally a digital illusion or digital delusion. We have all done it. We just need to not take part in societies shame game.

Why do we accept the shame that others project on us for our weight, body shape or overall appearance?

Don't you think it is time to take our power back and stop being mindless victims to the media and fashion magazines? There was nothing more empowering to me than the day I realized that actual person who makes us fee 'less than' is US/ME/YOU.

We should embrace the media onslaught of unrealistic imagery and choose to turn it into an inspiration for self improvement or accept it simply as someones subjective taste, not something that you are to be compared to or measured against. There IS strength in accountability ladies. I don't have a flat stomach because I choose to eat/drink what I want and not exercise to the level that would be required to achieve that result. I am not the size I was in high school because I choose not to put the work in to be so and instead I make excuses. I am actually happy with who I am today. It has been a long road, not without days I feel less than fabulous but that is all me, not participating in societies shame game. I accept accountability for myself and my choices. I strive to be the best version of myself not a version of someone else, especially someone who is clearly a figment of Photo Shops imagination. I do enjoy my fashion magazines too and feel no need or desire to compare myself to anything  I see, I just gush over the grossly over priced accessories and dream of the day I can waltz into CHANEL in Paris and get my quilted bag.

Thank you Rachel for getting this dialogue started. Enjoy your success and don't get caught up in the shame game.

Is it then shame on them? or shame on us?
What do YOU think?

It's All Up To YOU

Don't you think it is time to take accountability for your own life? I hear a lot of people blame the universe for their circumstances, or the lack thereof. It is an empowering thing to KNOW that YOU are in control of your life and where it goes. Make a mistake? Fix it. Make amends and learn.  If life faces you with things that are out of your control only YOU have the power of perception. You can perceive it as a negative or try to find the good, the lesson or the reason as it applies to your life path.

I came across a book today gifted to me by my Aunt Glenda as I was ready to move from Ontario, Canada to California to follow my dreams and start a new chapter.

It is called "Always Believe in yourself and your Dreams" - (WAYANT) - Blue Mountain Arts Collection. It is full of some great, simple wisdom about life.  In it was a few words I wanted to share.

"It's All Up To You" ~ Linda E. Knight (p. 17)

This life is the only one you are given.
Look for opportunities to grow and never be discouraged in your efforts to do so.
Replace your weaknesses with positives;
take life's broken pieces and recreate your dreams.
Never measure the future by the past; let yesterday become a memory and tomorrow a promise.
Begin each day by focusing on all that is good and you'll be in a position to handle whatever comes along.
Take responsibility for your action; never make excuses for not being the best you can be.
If you should slip, be comforted by the thought that we all do at times.
Determine your tomorrow by the choices toy make today, and you';; find yourself living in joy and triumph."

This seems simple enough to me.  Can you apply this to your own life? Try it and start TODAY because it's ALL up to YOU.

This Is MY Body

Due to the nature of our society, body image issues effect ALL of our lives. No matter what colour, race, gender or age.  We do everything we can to mask our perceived flaws, change our original appearance and avoid ageing. I wonder what the effects would be if we put half of this effort into acceptance. Accepting who we are and what we look like today. We can change our bodies through proper diet and exercise if we want to but we can also just be comfortable in our own skin and enjoy our lives.

In my quest to evolve and learn I came across a slowly growing online movement called "This is my body project". It literally moved me. The bravery of the people who post to this site and facebook page is truly inspirational (to say the least). To see people of all shapes and sizes, genders and ages bear all in a natural unairbrushed state (in photograph and in print) is amazing to me and their first step to acceptance and healing. Take a few moments to look at the images and stories. We are all VERY quick to judge others when really we should celebrate each others differences and work on ourselves.

This project was started by a very wise then 17 year old who had been bullied and hurt by people telling her she was ugly, fat and not good enough.  She explains her position in this video clip
I had a chance to ask her a few questions about her project and mission of acceptance recently

LISA: What inspired you to start this "project"?

KAILEI: The project kind of started accidentally.. I've been a model since I was around 15 years old and at the age of 17 I started to receive anonymous hate mail messages on a website called formspring. People whose identities I didn't know were messaging me calling me fat and too ugly to model, telling me I needed to start a diet, saying that the body I was showing off wasn't my own and was photoshopped to look the way it does in photographs. I'm not the type of person to retaliate to cyber bullies... so I decided to use my artwork to do the talking for me. That's when I took the first ever This is My Body photo. I posted it to show off the way my stomach really looked to all of the bullies who told me I was fake or wasn't good enough. What could they possibly say about me not being good enough if I was chubby, showed off my tummy and was still able to model? After that the photo got a major response, people started telling me they wanted to take photos similar to mine and the entire project jump started from there!

LISA: What do you think is the biggest negative influence on women's and/or men's body image?

KAILEI: The mass media holds a huge role in how we as a society view ourselves. We're shown approximately 3,000 advertisements a day. Do any of those advertisements feature an average sized man/woman? They all show us false images of what we're supposed to look like, men with huge muscles and bulgy bodyscapes and women sizes 0 and under. After all of that constant exposure it starts to rub off on us. We live in a world where thin is in and that's the only acceptable body type.

LISA: What do you hope to accomplish?

KAILEI: Well as I stated before thin is the only acceptable body type in our society. I'm hoping to change that perception. I want society to start believing that all healthy body types are beautiful, to the thinner side or the heavier side. I want communities to begin to come together, we don't see enough people using the Internet as a tool to appreciate each other and to make friends. Now it's more about shielding ourselves behind a screen and being what we want to be instead of being who we really are and being happy with that.

LISA: How can my readers participate?

KAILEI: The directions on how to submit and what we're looking for are posted on our facebook page
here And the form to submit can be sent via e-mail or through our website HERE

Of course I was compelled to participate as I accept myself and love who I am. I am perfectly imperfect, full of flaws, many of which I have earned. I have 2 beautiful babies and the stretch marks I wear has a badge of honor. My laugh lines came from amazing experiences and my frown lines too.

Of course no one has a perfect self image but we can all get on the road to acceptance and action if there are things we would like to change to get closer to our 'authentic self'.  As we all heal we all must take accountability for how we look AND feel. For me, I am currently transitioning my diet and lifestyle.  I have been vegetarian for 5 years but now am transitioning to a plant strong diet.  Plant strong is a diet of natural, whole foods. NO animal products or processed "food". I have a very limited alcohol consumption. No smoking or ANY drugs (prescription or otherwise) and I exercise 3-5 times a week. I love to LaBlast (DANCE) and Get outside to walk the beach or hike with my family.  I am doing this for my health and longevity. The welcomed side effect is weight loss and fitness. I'm doing this for myself and my family not for society. I am on the ME program.

This is an amazing affirmation to print out and put on every mirror in your home, carry with you or say to yourself at least once a day when you need too: "I ACCEPT MYSELF UNCONDITIONALLY RIGHT NOW" (Louise Hay)
