Mad As A Hatter

Illustration from Lewis Carroll Novel: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

Every time I open my social media or look at the Internet there is a celebration going on. It is International Teacher's Day, Doughnut Day, Cat Day and today it is MAD HATTER DAY!

I had no idea there was such a day but I will celebrate not only by wearing a fabulous hat but by sharing images from my family's 2013 Christmas Card photo shoot. It is also TBT online or "Throwback Thursday" so it's a perfect time to take a trip down photo memory lane.

Mad Hatter Day is celebrated on October 6th because his top hat, originally in the books illustrations as a card labelled "In This Style 10/6". It has been carried on as a symbol through Disney's adaptation in traditional animation form (1951) and the Tim Burton Film in 2010.

This day 10/6 is also six months after April Fools day which is the first silly holiday of the year! who knew?

Grecian Greatness: Dress Edition

Every single Vintage piece has a story. The story of the woman, or women who gave it a past life or the era/decade that the garment was first created.

I love when I come across imagery showcasing a piece that I have available in my eBoutique, EVOLUTION VINTAGE

Seen here in a light shade version on SNL star Jan Hooks during a skit in 1986.
Nora Dunn, the other half of the Sweeney Sisters alongside Jan Hooks - pictured on SNL in October 1986

The mint green Grecian goddess number by by Mister Jay is a draped delight from the 1980's an available via Evolution Vintage. I love the sequin and beaded detail at the waist. SHOP THE DRESS

Down The Rabbit Hole With Marc Jacobs

I adore the story and concept of Alice in Wonderland. I adore it so much that I used it as the inspiration for my family portrait in 2013.

I was pleased to discover that designer Marc Jacobs has designed a collection of Alice inspired goodies in collaboration with Disney.

Some of my FAV pieces:
I adore the enchanted garden motif (there is also a tote and back pack - the scarf in the same print is SOLD OUT)  and this door knob iphone case ($88)
Sadly for me both the sweat shirt and the hinged cuff are SOLD OUT!  The double "This Way" Ring not pictured here there is 2 left!  You can still get your hands on the flower lap top case ($128) HURRY though it seems like everyone is taking the plunge down the rabbit hole.

In other Alice news watch the trailer for the new Alice Through The Looking Glass film.

You will have plenty of time to prepare, the film will open on Memorial Day 2016!

CLOTHES MINDED: My Definition

Kate Moss by Richard Avedon - Versace F/W 1996

I don't know about you but when I buy clothes I prefer that they serve more than one purpose or have the ability to create more than one look. I like garments that can be styled at least 2 different ways, but MORE is indeed better. We all have multi-faceted lives that are "on-the-go" and our clothing needs to be as versatile as we are. Each day that I Re-Style a garment from fashion's past with contemporary pieces I think of the women who I call CLOTHES MINDED, these are not the clothing obsessed but the polar opposite.

These ladies have tunnel vision on the contemporary, fast fashion that saturates our current marketplace. The women who turn their nose up at Vintage pieces because to them they garner "less value" because they have had a previous life. I'm dedicating my professional time to educating these women on the value and relevance of fashions past as it applies to the current fashion landscape.
The past of these garments are the actual ALLURE, not the deterrent.
CLOTHES MINDED (My personal definition) : A Closed Minded Person as it pertains to CLOTHING, particularly Vintage.

Imagine if we thought the same about people with a past? we ALL have a past. So does the shirt in Forever 21 that 5 women just tried on before you, Ooops! Should we be over looked then or our value lessened because of our previous life or past? Ridiculous right? the same goes for previously loved garments that via Evolution Vintage have been professionally cleaned, repaired when needed and sold ready for their new life.

This post is for those CLOTHES-MINDED ladies who can't see how the past can apply to the future when it comes to clothing.

I have literally hundreds of examples in my current Evolution Vintage inventory but I will use this This Vintage Damask printed 2 piece dress and cape set as an example here. I have re-styled it current AND in more ways than one.

GET THE COMPLETE LOOK (Under $200):
Shoes (JustFab "Celia" Shoe) $39.95

First it is styled as it was intended. The dress and the cape together. Adding a contemporary colored bag, shoe or jewelry would time warp this set into 2014. I think that it stands alone as current as-is but contemporary accessories you can re-style that are all ready in your wardrobe.

The printed dress can be worn alone. Enhance the look with a pop of color. ANY bold color bag or shoe would bring this black and white to life!
Or by reversing the cape to expose the Damask Print it can be styled with contemporary distressed denim, a trouser, pencil skirt or shorts. The cape itself can we worn two ways.

Are You CLOTHES MINDED?
How could you re-style this set?

Pink Perfect: Hall & Valena

Jerry Hall 1970's

I am in the middle of a MAJOR style overhaul in my eBoutique Evolution Vintage. I have enlisted the help of a great team to make this evolution possible. I have used the most beautiful local models, for which I have hand selected to represent a cross section of beauty and culture. My talented team mate and photographer, Tamara Wickstrom and the help of a few of my closest friends. Inspiration is all around and for this particular shot I choose the lovely and talented model, Amanda Valena to make my vision of a 70's chic moment come to life.  She just screamed Jerry Hall circa 1970's to me. She's a beautiful blond that the camera loves and she has excellent energy. She can vamp it up and made this 70's pink polyester gown a perfect mix of Jerry 1970's and Amanda 2014.

It's not that she is Jerry's doppelganger or twin but the same essence was present in these images.

The COMPLICE Story

Styled by LisaG
Get the look via Evolution Vintage
Model: Kat Cleave

I want to give you the COMPLICE story (pronounced com-plee-chay). This label is/was part of a large Italian fashion company once known as The Genny Group, now know as Genny Holdings SPA
Complice 1992 (designed by Dominco Dolce and Stefano Gabbana)

At the age of 25 Gianni Versace makes the move to Milan. He designs his first PRÊT-À-PORTER collections for Complice (1974), Genny and Callaghan.  The name of the line came according to a 1991 New York Magazine article because, "between Genny and the designer there is complicity"

 VOGUE PARIS 1977 COMPLICE
Commenting to Women's Wear Daily, Girombelli (Co-founder) said she aimed for a "succinct combination of straightforward American sportswear and Italian flair." for the Genny group and it's associated brands.
Harper's Bazaar - 1986

80's Complice Ad
Versace was succeeded by several other designers who went on to successfully design under their own names such as, Claude Montana and Dolce/Gabbana who made their debut for the label in Fall of 1990.

I reached out to the Genny Group and am still waiting for their reply as to when this label stopped production. Little information is available.

Do you have any COMPLICE in your closet?

Festival Fabulous

Image: Tamara Wickstrom  Model/Stylist: LisaG

The outdoor festival season usually begins with Coachella, the music and art festival running on two weekends April 11-13 and 18-20 just outside of Palm Springs, California. This is a sold out event and attracts thousands of music art and FASHION lovers.

Coachella is like a hybrid of fashions past and future, think late 60's folk festival (like Woodstock) meets an Ani Sui runway show (1990's or even 2011) - The fashion is the same. Big floppy hats, statement and tribal jewelry, flower crowns, fringe, maxi dresses, short shorts, crochet and bold, colorful prints.
